Fuentes's latest novel (after The Orange Tree), which seems to be semi-autobiographical, grapples with a double nostalgia?for a love affair and for the bygone era of the 1960s. On New Year's Eve 1970, the narrator, an acclaimed Mexican novelist recently turned 40 (like Fuentes at the time), meets American actress Diana Soren, a character who draws from two mythic archetypes. One is the muse-like moon goddess alternately known as Cybele, Astarte or Diana; the second is the late Jean Seberg, whose stand-in here comes complete with a small-town Iowa upbringing, a burst into fame after being discovered by a dictatorial director to play Joan of Arc and a hounding by the American media for her radical affiliations, which ends in her suicide. Despite his passion for Diana, the narrator learns that she is a "goddess who hunts alone," as their difficult affair undermines his confidence in his abilities as a Don Juan, his standing as a Mexican leftist and his prowess as an imaginative author. Real-life figures such as William Styron and Luis Bu?uel make memorable appearances, and the author's ironic, kindly take on his younger alter ego is affecting. Diana, however, lacks real mystique and individualism, and, ultimately, sparks fly not between the author's lovers but only between the lines of his glittery prose.

Fuentes's latest novel, a meditation on the question "Can we love on earth and someday deserve heaven?" doubles as a tell-all about a love affair with actress Jean Seberg. Notables such as Eduardo Terrazas and William Styron appear as characters under their own names. Seberg is disguised as Diana Soren, and her husband, French author Romain Gary, is Ivan Gravet. The story begins at a 1970 New Year's party, and much is made of the political turmoil of the moment, both in the United States and in Mexico. Carlos, a prominent Mexican novelist, meets Diana Soren, and they begin an affair that will take them to dusty Santiago, the location of Diana's latest film, and end as it began?with betrayal. The narrative is marked by digressions into Sixties revolutionary politics, the meaning of literary creation, and the Puritan origins of the United States. But these never distract from the central themes of the novel?the hunger with which Diana and Carlos consume each other, the tragic link between the eternity of desire and the finitude of love; the wish to create and the inexorable will to destroy. Seberg was scandalized when the FBI alleged in 1970 that she had been impregnated by a member of the Black Panther Party. She committed suicide in 1979; her husband in 1980. In an interesting revisionist turn, the novel claims (as far as Diana Soren is concerned) that the father was a Mexican dissident she met while in Santiago and, in its closing passage, cites an FBI statement admitting the slander. A strange blend of fact and fiction that puts Joe McGuiness to shame; highly recommended for collections of serious fiction.

Fuentes writes in homage to a femme fatale who is ultimately most fatal of all to herself: the 32-year-old Iowa-born, has-been actress Diana Soren, viewed by her married Mexican novelist lover as a huntress like her mythological namesake. The fictional novelist narrates the story of his two-month affair with Diana, which took place in 1970 while she was shooting a third-rate movie on location in Santiago. Within the compressed panorama of a relatively short book, Fuentes wants to take the measure of 1960s political radicalism in the U.S., Mexico, and Europe and to reflect on its human and societal costs--not just to chronicle a relationship with "an exceptional woman." Meanwhile, he also considers the moral and artistic struggles involved in his character's creative crisis. The problem, though, in this abundantly ambitious novel is mainly the woman herself: Diana is meant to represent a universal fantasy figure, but she can't maintain the rapture and the tragedy that Fuentes pins on her. Another obstacle: writing in an apparently autobiographical mode, Fuentes seemingly prefers passion to irony. Still, the author's reputation will ensure interest where serious fiction has an audience. Molly McQuade

A gripping tale of obsession

In "Diana, the Goddess Who Hunts Alone," the reader will discover a compelling tale by one of the masters of contemporary fiction. This novel by Carlos Fuentes has been translated into English by Alfred Mac Adam. Taking place primarily in 1970, the book tells the story of a tempestuous love affair between the narrator, who is a Mexican novelist, and American actress Diana Soren.
The novel captures the turbulence of the era being portrayed. Such phenomena as the Black Power movement and FBI surveillance of suspected "radicals" are woven into the narrative. Particularly interesting is the way that real people appear as characters in the book; the other characters have encounters, and sometimes conversations, with such figures as William Styron, James Baldwin, and Tina Turner. The novel is superbly written, and deals with such fascinating topics as national identity, racial identity, obsession, paranoia, creativity, political radicalism, fidelity, and Hollywood mythmaking.
One interesting note: The character of Diana Soren appears to be based on a real-life person, actress Jean Seberg. I recommend that those who are fascinated by Fuentes' novel do a little research on Seberg's life. Finally, I give "Diana" high praise as an outstanding example of the art of the novel.

Spite or Obscure Object of Desire?

Carlos Fuentes had a brief but tempestuous affair with actress Jean Seberg over thirty years ago. The encounter seems to have marked him, for this book is a barely disguised roman a clef (where Diana Soren = Jean Seberg) about his relationship. It is like one of those European stories where the man gives up everything to follow some vixen, including his money, family, and peace of mind. Luis Bunuel (who actually appears in this novel as a character) created the ultimate masterpiece of the genre with his film THAT OBSCURE OBJECT OF DESIRE.
Jean Seberg has come down to us today as a tortured sado-masochistic saint who still has the power to beguile men. Film posters and stills featuring her and her movies command a premium in today's cinememorabilia market; and I know several collectors who seek out anything they can find depicting her. Perhaps, what Marilyn Monroe was for the 1950s, Jean Seberg was for the 1960s.
Why Fuentes wrote this novel in the way he did puzzles me. If I were as obsessed as he was, I would still feel queasy about exposing the dirty bedsheets and underwear to the gaze of the public. To me, love -- however brief or unhappy -- is a gift of the gods; and by spiting it, one shows oneself to be somehow unworthy. Fuentes has flouted a gift whose memory I would have locked away in the deepest recesses of my being and thrown away the key.
If, however, Fuentes feels himself to have been traduced by his relationship, like Charles Swann at the end of Proust's SWANN'S WAY after his recognition of Odette's unfaithfulness, I could understand his need to exorcise this "expense of spirit in a waste of shame."
Instead, I see both the anger and the gratefulness simultaneously. As a result, DIANA THE GODDESS WHO HUNTS ALONE leaves me with a feeling of unease, as if the author did not know his own mind and went off in several emotional directions at once.
The result is a very well written book that in the end does not quite jell. One can't worship at the shrine and spit at it at the same time.

A man who generally gets everything he wants, marriage and a multitude of affairs without consequence. This book details a passionate affair between two excentric people with the female in total control. I didn't put it down until it was read
