Kostioukovitch, Umberto Eco's Russian translator, seems an unlikely source for a volume that feels like an instant Italian food and food history classic, but she's lived in Italy for 20 years and brings a nonnative's eye and taste to a fairly comprehensive gastronomical project. Structured as an imaginary journey from region to region, north to south, the book opens with a chapter on Friuli Venezia Giulia and proceeds down the peninsula from one region to the next. Each chapter takes a more or less similar approach, leisurely discussing the respective region in a variety of terms from history to geography and culture; sooner, as with the chapter on Puglia, or later, as with Lazio/Rome, food becomes the paramount topic. Though the book is absolutely not about wine, the author deftly touches on matters like the history of Campari and Frascati. Though there are no recipes, there are helpful sidebars that list dishes, products and beverages typical of each region, and in between are chapters on subjects pertinent to Italy's food and identity. Some, such as olive oil and pasta, are to be expected, while others are organized around topics like pilgrims, joy or larger themes like the impact of the Americas or totalitarianism; all are full of the sort of well-researched literary arcana and cross-cultural connections that enrich the entire book. About the Author

Elena Kostioukovitch was born in Kiev in 1958, studied in Russia, and moved to Italy in 1988. She is an essayist, translator, and literary agent. Her 1988 translation of Umberto Eco's The Name of the Rose was a literary sensation in Russia and led to a longtime collaboration with Eco. Since 1988, she has been the editor of the Russian series for Bompiani/RCS Publishers, and, since 1996, of a series from Edizioni Frassinelli. She isthe recipient of numerous prizes, including the Welcome Prize (2006), given by the Russian National Association of Restaurateurs. In 2006 Kostioukovitch published Perche agli Italiani piaci parlare del cibo (Why Italians Love to Talk About Food). A bestseller in Italy and Russia, the book received the Bancarella della Cucina award and the Chiavari Literary Award in 2007. Kostioukovitch lives with her husband and two children in Milan.

An off-beat take on the Italian cookbook and Italian culture

Kostioukovitch is Umberto Eco's Russian language translator, and has lived in Italy for the past twenty years. This book is about half pensive reflection on topics of (presumably common Italian) conversation such as totalitarianism, "Joy," pilgrims, and America, and half discussions of the foods and wines of Italy as she takes an imaginary trip around the country. A lot of food is described, quite lovingly, but there aren't really any recipes. It's an odd book, a Russian writing about Italian food and food traditions for Italian readers and then the book is translated into English and brought to the States.

I'm predicting wildly mixed reviews. It's a cookbook in the sense that MFK Fisher's books are cookbooks. It's a travelogue in the sense that Paul Theroux's books are. It's a fun, literate look at Italian food and conversations. But no recipes, and with her Russian background there's a suspicion of inauthenticity around the whole project.

In 2006 Kostioukovitch published this work in Italian as "Perche agli Italiani piaci parlare del cibo." Since then it's been a bestseller in both Russia and Italy and the winner of both culinary and literary prizes in Italy.

WHY ITALIANS LOVE TO TALK ABOUT FOOD is published in English for the first time and provides a fine food and culinary survey of Italy's major regions. From how popular dishes emerged to specialty tastes, eating habits, and even the Church's influence on Roman foods, this is an outstanding survey of Italian regional food developments, and is a top pick for libraries who have Italian recipe collections but want to achieve cultural depth and insight.

An unusual but worthwhile book

The book is a very unusual one. I think the title is misleading. I did not learn "why" Italians love to talk about food. There is little in the book that tells you that. The book is still worthwhile but unusual.

First, note that there are no recipes and few photos. There are no cute or funny anecdotes. It is a pretty serious book.

Overall, it is a work of cultural anthropology, more than anything, although it is not academic or rigorous. Yet it is focused on the history and geography of food, food as a signifier, food as a political issue, and the cultural significance of food. Often the author uses the phrase "the culinary code" and that tells you in brief what the theme of the book is. There are chapter titled "Jews" and "Totalitarianism" that are among the best in the book but the fact that they are tells you what kind of book this is. There were a number of interesting passages about how certain dishes, such as stuffed zucchini flowers or eggplant, came to be "Italian" that are worth the price of purchase. Several I wound up reading out loud to my family and they are pretty memorable. But they are serious not funny as the title might lead you to believe. And there are many chapters that do not rise to that level. Sometimes the anthropological perspective overwhelms, such as in the chapter "Restaurants" when the author finds it worth writing down that the waiter asks the people at the table whether they like still or sparkling water, "thus bringing out affinities or differences among those gathered". That is an extreme example yet indicative of the book's perspective. I would also note that the author has a generally dull style, with too many sentences governed by "is", "are" and the passive voice; also I found the font a little difficult to read.

Overall, I recommend this for those who have a serious interest in Italian culture but not for anyone who has a lighter interest simply in Italian food.

Emmott, who predicted in 1989 that Japan's economic ascent would falter (in The Sun Also Sets), now applies his powers of conjecture again to project how broad historical forces will shape the 21st century, based on an analysis of the 20th. Editor in chief of the Economist, Emmott is a believer in the relative benevolence of American dominance and the relative rewards of unleashed capitalism. The two most important dynamics of the 20th century, he says, were the "United States taking over from Britain" as the protector of global order and capitalism's struggle against its authoritarian antagonists. Emmott believes the most crucial questions for the 21st century are whether America "will continue to keep the peace" and whether "capitalism will survive." Assessing the potential threats to American supremacy-China, Japan, the European Union, terrorism and the precariousness of America's commitment to internationalism-Emmott is cautiously optimistic about America's capacity to continue its leadership role. He is sometimes uncritical in prescribing freer markets as a panacea, but his endorsement of capitalism is carefully qualified. He identifies four flaws threatening its survival: Capitalism is "Unpopular," "Unstable," "Unequal" and "Unclean," in the words of his chapter headings. Despite limited government interventions to correct these dysfunctions, Emmott is hopeful that capitalism can expand its domain in the coming century. It is a wide-ranging and speculative project, and Emmott occasionally floats off into a breezy punditry. But mostly, his arguments are well grounded and his vision of the future is insightful.

As the abatement of the cold war released international politics and economics to flow in new directions, Emmott observed affairs from one of the most influential posts in journalism: the editorship of the Economist. His book will draw keen attention because of his prognostications about the world's next decades, especially considering trends of the 1990s indicative of danger and instability, including currency collapses, global warming, Islamic terrorism, and Chinese-American friction. Although he cautions readers to remain calm, Emmott elucidates myriad ways the international environment could dramatically deteriorate. However, he also posits that ameliorating trends will be ascendant, provided that America retains global hegemony and capitalism "retains the current, unusual allegiance it commands around the world." Emmott's sly injection of the word unusual underpins his survey of capitalism's twentieth-century history, in which it was accepted (except where abolished) for its bounty but resented for its inherent accentuation of inequality. Past lessons applied to the future.

(Note to Amazon: Over a month ago, I wrote the following review. Now and then, would access the title to see if the review had been posted. It had not. Last night, 10 January, I accessed Amazon's page with all my reviews and discovered the review was posted on that page. I returned to the book's page, but my review was not there. So, the review is posted on the page with all my reviews, but not on the review page for the book. Oddly, at least four people have read the view, how did they read it?)
The review title above was stolen from the book's subtitle. Mr. Emmontt's aim is not to predict the future, but to discover in last century's history those forces driving history.
To that end, the first part of the book devotes a chapter each to the histories of the United States, Europe & Russia, China and Japan. It ends with a chapter on world conflict and terror. The second part's chapters look at capitalism from the perspectives of booms & busts, social perceptions, domestic inequality, international inequality and the environment. There is both an introductory and concluding chapter.
Since a few commented on the author's analysis of China, I'll provide what I read him to say:
1.China is not like Imperial Germany, but perhaps more like Imperial Japan in the early decade of the 20th century.
2. Using traditional economic indicators, China is not yet the economic giant some envision. A few examples:
(a) China's share of world merchandise exports is around that of the Netherlands.
(b) China's GDP/person is around that of Sri Lanka.
(c) If purchasing power parity is used, then China's GDP is bigger than Japan's, but behind Thailand's and only 1/4 Korea's.
(d) Direct foregin investment into Japan is around 1/3 of Sweden's and 1/2 of the United Kingdom.
Several of these measures exclude Hong Kong. Some would object, but Hong Kong's numbers can be easily added and should the result significantly change China's position, what would that suggest about China's economic system relative to Hong Kong's?
The above numbers are on pp. 69-71
That said, the author begins by saying, ~ " ...With a population of 1.3 billion, it's natural rank ought again to be as the world's largest economy ... achieved with quite moderate levels of growth, if substained a few decades ... overtaking America as the world's largest economy sometime in the second or third decade of this century ... yet what would be geniunely disturbing would be if China failed to achieve its natural position as the world's largest economy ... for this would almost certainly mean that there had been some sort of economic breakdown, which would probably mean there had been a political breakdown..."
Much of the chapter examines how China's polity and economy interacted in the 20th century since similar pressures will continue into the 21st century.
It's a fine book. Concise and entertaining.

The prognosis of a paranoid optimist

Visions of the future tend to be apocalyptic, whether it be grand geopolitical adjustments, the fear that growth will devastate the environment, or that the Malthusian trap will finally enclose humankind. In fact these types of prophesies make for good reading but, usually, silly predictions. To those who expect to read about the "fall of great powers," "coming anarchies," "clash of civilizations," or "end of histories," (to name a few futuristic bestsellers), Bill Emmott's book will appear rather dull and unimaginative. But it may well turn out to be more accurate than most other looks into the crystal ball.
Broadly speaking, forecasts suffer from two drawbacks: either they focus too much on detail and miss important underlying trends, or they try to conceive of a grand vision and lose touch with reality in the process. Bill Emmott, editor of The Economist since 1993, has tried to overcome these two problems by synthesizing his journalistic attention to detail with his historical instincts that add perspective to his argument. The product is a carefully balanced vision of where the world is headed.
Mr. Emmott believes that two big questions will define the fate of this century: will American hegemony continue and will capitalism survive? For both, he is optimistic. America's main elements of power, he argues, are unaltered-its tolerance of capitalism, its meritocracy and its focus on education. At the same time, potential rivals, for different reasons, are unlikely to take over any time soon. Terrorism, while important, is also unlikely to play a world-altering role in the coming years.
What about capitalism? After the end of the cold war, capitalism's intellectual and political allegiance has grown stronger. This trend is likely to continue, provided that capitalism deals with its biggest challenges-its unpopularity, uncleanness, inequality, and instability. Mr. Emmott goes at great length to show that the capitalist future is not certain-but he also shows with great conviction that most objections to capitalism are unfounded.
Mr. Emmott writes that he looks into the future with the outlook of a paranoid optimist: progress will continue, albeit with setbacks here and there. All too often, books on the future take on a big claim and foresee some radical new world order. A book predicting that the status quo will continue well into this century seems out of place with the futuristic literature. That may disappoint many readers. But that does not mean that Mr. Emmott is not right.

Frank Koehler was only 15 when he shot a friend in the back for double-crossing him. That's the sort of guy he was--violent, Mob-connected, and remorse-free. In the same rough-and-tumble postwar neighborhood on Manhattan's West Side lived a very different young man: Andy Rosenzweig, rigorously straight and determined to become a policeman at a time when cops were more likely to be taking naps or bribes than nabbing criminals. Years later, in 1970, Koehler murdered two men after an argument in a restaurant. One of the victims was a friend of Rosenzweig's. It was a straightforward case, but in a typical show of the NYPD's ineptitude, the case was closed when someone decided to declare Koehler dead, allowing him to slip away.

Twenty-seven years after the murders, on the eve of Rosenzweig's retirement as chief of investigations, he reopened the case, determined not to leave without catching the murderer of his friend. Philip Gourevitch, who last examined murder in the award-winning We Wish to Inform You That Tomorrow We Will Be Killed with Our Families: Stories from Rwanda, is more interested in the personalities of killers and those who pursue them than the drama of murder itself. As a result, A Cold Case is short on tension, but it is an excellent character study. Gourevitch immerses us in the "white hoodlum milieu of another time and from a city which no longer really exists," and he conjures up the particular moral universe of each character--Rosenzweig; murder victim Richie Glennon, an ex-prizefighter who walked the fence between the good guys and the bad guys; Murray Richman, the Mob-defending lawyer from the Bronx who likes murder cases because there's "one less witness to worry about"; and Koehler himself, now elderly but still unremorseful. Gourevitch's skillful handling raises intriguing contradictions and questions, not least this one Koehler asks about himself: "Why would people still think good of this asshole?" In 1970, a New York criminal named Frankie Koehler killed two men in cold blood, then disappeared. Over the decades, he was all but given up for dead. Nothing haunts a cop like loose ends, however, and 30 years later lawman and fugitive at long last crossed paths. Basing this book on his article of the same title, New Yorker staff writer and NBCC and L.A. Times award-winning author Gourevitch revisits this case. Gourevitch's first book (We Wish to Inform You That Tomorrow We Will Be Killed with Our Families: Stories from Rwanda) dealt with the Rwandan genocide and that region's judicial vacuum; the scope here is smaller but, as Gourevitch shows, murder is a seemingly inescapable aspect of the human condition. In clean prose, the author follows former NYPD officer Andy Rosenzweig (now an investigator with the Manhattan D.A.'s office), who, like Koehler, was raised on the streets of postwar New York, a city that has all but disappeared except in the hands of capable writers. And Gourevitch lets his near-perfect pitch dialogue do much of the work. "I wouldn't kill anybody for money under any conditions.... That's a scumbag does that," Koehler says. The only jarring moments in this otherwise elegant and restrained narrative are the sudden intrusions of the pronoun "I." This residue of New Yorker style reminds readers that the material is not entirely fresh. But that is a minor complaint, for as Rosenzweig says, quoting a fellow officer, "Who speaks for the dead? Nobody. As a rule, nobody speaks for the dead, unless we do." Gourevitch has secured a place next to Rosenzweig in that lonely and all-important choir. 12 b&w photos. His interest wasn't just professional; Rosenzweig knew the two murdered men and had been on the fringes of the slightly sordid world from which both the victims and the murderer came. New Yorker writer Gourevitch (We Wish To Inform You That Tomorrow We Will Be Killed with Our Families) covers not only the way investigators attack a "cold case" but the lives of both Koehler and Rosenzweig and how a similar milieu could birth both a dedicated lawman and a cold-blooded killer. Koehler's statements about his life, both as a small-time hood and as a good citizen while he was in hiding, are both fascinating and chilling. Gourevitch does a splendid job with this short, focused book, which should find a home in public libraries with true-crime collections.

A quick, thoughtful read

This book does not have near the impact of Philip Gourevitch's first book, which concerned the Rwanda massacres. The story, about a righteous cop's attempt to bring closure to an old murder case, follows relatively predictable lines. But Gourevitch brings these real people to life, with simple language and telling anecdotes.

This book is a joke. At best it is random notes. It has nothing going for it. There is no "repeat" no suspense. No emotion. No movement. This is a product of a very sloppy mind. Mr. G. should write about something he cares about. Obviously with this book he only cared about the money. He is a typical New Yorker writer--a lazy fraud.

not substantial enough

When I read Gourevitch's original article in The New Yorker on which the book is based, I was intrigued. It was in interesting story, well told. But the book seems padded and is occasionally boring (I skipped bits which I almost never do on principle). Worse, it doesn't seem that difficult or profound a case, and you start to question the original story. Really, not a lot happens, though there is a little insight into detection methods and the hoodlum milieu. Gourevitch is a good writer and journalist, but this shouldn't have been a book.

Remembrance of time past

This is a mesmerising many-layered book. The fascinating narrative of the fabulously wealthy Jewish Ephrussi family moves through the decades from commercial Odessa to the Paris of the Impressionists and artistic salons to the brutal destruction of the Anschluss of 1938 in Vienna and a familial diaspora over three continents. Parallel to this, we follow with the author his own emotive journey to reclaim the lives lived in the vanished rooms of his forbears. This he does sensitively and successfully, imagining his way there through archives, letters and contemporary fiction. He visits all the great houses and, in Odessa, tasting the dust of the demolished palace rooms, he rejoices in the survival of the Ephrussi family emblem on a last remaining banister.

Such evocative writing and small discovered detail make this a story we want to follow with him and we find that this is not, after all, a tale of acquisition but of loss. The 264 tiny Japanese carvings (netsuke) bought in the 1870s in Paris are all that now remain of the family possessions. We also come to understand another loss: the Ephrussis no longer felt defined by their Jewish origins: artists and socialites passed through their grand salons. It is shocking to discover that even those who enjoyed their patronage were casually anti-Semitic. It is hard to read the vivid account of the abrupt violence of the Nazis as they took (almost) every precious possession from them, leaving them, in the end, only their Jewishness.

The netsuke are the beginning and happy ending of the story. Their exquisite detail is emblematic of this beautifully crafted book and its touching story of the individuals through whose hands they passed. One or other of them seems, like a rosary, to accompany the writer in his travels: a constant reminder to keep faith with his past.

How do you write a sad story without nostalgia?

Imagine you are the descendant of one of those families of 19th-century Jewish financiers who spread around the major capitals of Europe to forge a continental empire. Along the way, the family comes to feature an art collector who served as a patron for the Impressionists and inspired Proust's Swann. A later generation includes one of the first women to attend university in the early twentieth century; she graduates as a lawyer, becomes a writer and corresponds with Rilke. Imagine that the family's wealth disappears in the blink of an eye when Germany annexes Austria. That is in a nutshell the story of the Ephrussi clan, which Edmund De Waal chronicles in "The Hare with Amber Eyes." That is only a peek at the material that the author had at his disposal, which should have made the work relatively simple to write. But the author set himself a challenge. He refused to produce a straightforward history: "It could write itself, I think, this kind of story. A few stitched-together wistful anecdotes, more about the Orient-Express, of course, a bit of wandering around Prague or somewhere equally photogenic, some clippings from Google on ballrooms in the Belle Epoque. It would come out as nostalgic. And thin."

Instead of a predictable tale from Mitteleuropa about lost grandeur, the author takes a (slightly Proustian) shortcut that leads to unexpected and sometimes deeply moving places. One of the illustrious ancestors collected tiny but incredibly intricate Japanese carvings called netsuke used in early modern Japan as toggles for purse strings. The book traces the story of these sculptures as they are passed down from one generation of Ephrussi to the next. Along the way, the author interrogates subtle ways in which the netsuke's meaning shifts when they move from Third Republic Paris to Harry Lime's Vienna and beyond. Through this device, De Waal manages to both narrate the story of the rise and fall of the Ephrussi and also sketch the myriad objects they owned and collected during their century and a half of eminence. The book manages to write an elegant history not just of people but also of the places they inhabited and the things they loved and touched. Nothing thin about that.

A beautifully written memoir about Japanese Art, rich French Jews, the Nazis and much, much more

There are men and women who write beautifully, every word inevitable, the paragraphs building into chapters, the chapters adding up to a great book, and we never suspect that their work is a phenomenal trick --- that they bled over every word, turned every sentence around a dozen times, missed meals with their children, sacrificing all to make their writing look effortless.
And then there are men and women who write beautifully because they're tuned to a different frequency and do everything beautifully. They may work to make their writing better, but they're starting at such a high level they really don't need to --- they're in humanity's elite.

Edward de Waal is in that second group. And so we start with an irony --- the author of the most exquisite memoir you're likely to read this year isn't a writer. He's a potter, said to be one of the best in England, and Professor of Ceramics at the University of Westminster.

You could say the eye that judges a pot is also a writer's eye.

And you could say a gifted Brit who studied English at Cambridge really should be able to write a compelling family story.

But none of that would explain the fierce attachment early readers of "The Hare with Amber Eyes" have for it, why they can't help talking about it, why they press copies on friends. Let me try. Start here: "The Hare with Amber Eyes" has, as they say in show biz, everything. The highest echelons of Society in pre-World War I Paris. Nazi thugs and Austrian collaborators. A gay heir who takes refuge in Japan. Style. Seduction. Rothschild-level wealth. Two centuries of anti-Semitism. And 264 pieces of netsuke, the pocket-sized ivory-or-wood sculpture first made in Japan in the 17th century.

It is on these netsuke that de Waal hangs his tale --- or, rather, searches for it. Decades after he apprenticed as a potter in Japan, he has returned to research his mentor. In the afternoons, he makes pots. And, one afternoon a week, he visits his great-uncle Iggie.

Iggie owns a large vitrine, in which he displays his netsuke collection. He has stories about that collection, but then he has so many tales about his family that de Waal delightedly spoons them up --- glorious anecdotes of hunting parties in Czechoslovakia, gypsies with dancing bears, his grandmother bringing special cakes from Vienna on the Orient Express. And then this:

"And Emmy pulling him from the window at breakfast to show him an autumnal tree outside the dining room window covered in goldfinches. And how when he knocked on the window and they flew, the tree was still blazing golden."

I shivered when I read that last sentence --- you don't often read a description of real-world magic expressed so magically. And so simply!

All week long, I open books, hoping for a line like that. Mostly, I get well-intentioned banality --- the world viewed through eyes dulled by experience. Bu de Waal is a visual artist; he lives to look, and look hard. And, like a detective, he'll keep looking until he's put the objects of his interest into a kind of order.

His interest: the collection of netsuke bought in 1870 in Paris by Charles Ephrussi, a cousin of his great-grandfather. Because his family is "staggeringly rich," Charles is able to exercise his considerable taste. No holding back with this collector --- in the best story about Charles, he buys a still life of asparagus from Manet at a price so over-the-top that the artist sends a unique thank-you: a painting of a single stalk of asparagus, with a note, "This seems to have slipped from the bundle."

Charles in Paris --- a city of salons, exquisite clothes, complicated relationships. The world of Proust. It's no surprise that Charles and Marcel were friends or that the novelist based a character on him.

"I have fallen for Charles," de Waal writes. Yes, he has, and it shows; there's more here about Charles than most readers will want. Feel free to skim. Skip, if you must. But don't, for the sake of your immortal soul, put the book down, for in 1899, Charles sends his first cousin in Vienna the netsuke as a wedding present and the book goes into a different gear.

In Vienna, de Waal writes, there were 145,000 Jews in 1899 --- 71 per cent of the city's financiers, 65 per cent of the lawyers, 59 per cent of the doctors, half the journalists. Why does he begin this chapter by telling us about the Jews when, as he notes, they were so assimilated? Oh, you know why; it just takes three-and-a-half decades for the anti-Semitism he chronicles to reach a boil.

I've studied World War I, as you have, but not from the point-of-view of a rich Jewish banker in Austria. I'm obsessed, as you may be, with the rise of the Nazis, but --- silly me --- I somehow thought that Jews who owned palaces were exempt. So you will encounter nail-biting terror here. And you'll be brought up short: How did a book about an collection of objects take such a radical turn? And how, amid the horror, did 264 pieces of netsuke survive intact?

England, Japan, Russia. The research unhinges de Waal: "I no longer know if this book is about my family, or memory, or myself, or if it is a book about small Japanese things." Curiously, that is to the book's advantage; it's really up to the reader to take what meaning he or she can from this story of objects gained, lost, found.

What are objects to us? Do they change when we hold them, display them, give them value? Do they "retain the pulse of their makeup?" If we didn't collect anything, how would we remember who we were?

Emund de Waal and his wife live with their three young children --- and the vitrine of netsuke. The kids sometimes play with the little pieces. "But there is no aesthetic life with small kids around," de Waal has told interviewers. "They want that plastic tiara, or Disney water pistol --- and you remember what it is to start accumulating things in your life." The implication is clear: Eventually those kids will understand and appreciate what it means to hold the objects of their ancestors.

My ancestors are dust. At most, there are a few photographs. So for me, the moral of this book is that everything matters but nothing lasts. Cherish beauty, but keep it private. And, if you are a Jew, always be prepared to pack and flee on an hour's notice.

Your take will be just as personal. And you might as well accept that going in --- this is not a book about Japanese art objects.

A elegy for a democratic society

This is a powerfully well-written work, which begins with clear-cut moral examples and ends with an especially uncomfortable look at our own 'democratic' way of life.

I think we all firmly believe that if we had been in Germany in 1938, of course we would have stood up to Nazi Germany. Of course, 'we' would have been on the right side - even though history proves that millions of people happily chose to be on the wrong side. If we had lived in Mississippi in 1955, of course 'we' would have stood up for integration and equal rights.

We always believe that we're our own heroes and that when push comes to shove we'll make the right choice. But as author Eyal Press shows, that's the exception in our society. Press correctly points out that protesters, whistleblowers, etc., are often considered "self-indulgent;" since we have the RIGHT to protest, the naysayer's belief seems to be, then the actual ACT of protest is redundant.

His thesis is proven with Occupy Wall Street, for example. Instead of any respect for people willing to camp out and get beat up and teargassed by police, they got mocked and derided as unemployed, drug-addled hippies. It's got nothing to do with whether the protest is right-minded or not, but that the entire protest is belittled. But it goes both ways; Operation Rescue and Randall Terry - say what you want about them, they're committed - are mocked as religious fanatics outside society's mainstream.

Of course we mock the two groups - because if one or both is right, then it means the rest of us live complete lies. It's certainly more comfortable to be cynical and snarky, instead of admitting that we might voluntarily live in a system of total economic injustice and unfairness, while surrounded by the deaths of thousands of babies. And we stood on the sidelines while other people took a stand that we made fun of.

Press talks about corporate whistleblowers and how we 'expect' people to stand up and do the right thing, but when they actually do it, they're barely supported, often ignored, usually sued, rarely protected by the government and system supposedly so eager to have their help.

In Fall 1991, I was getting ready to deploy to Desert Storm as an Army soldier. My brother, a peacenik hippie, went to a Red Sox game at Fenway Park and not only didn't take his hat for the national anthem, he didn't even stand up. He got predictable torrents of abuse and eventually an escort into the concourse to get away from the threats, and when I heard the story, I called him a dirty traitor. After all, I was the hero, soon to risk life and limb overseas - so I had no sympathy for simpleminded protests. But I had the entire power of the US government and military supporting me; my brother didn't have anything but a sense, misguided or not, of conviction. Maybe he was right, maybe he was wrong - but who was the brave one? It's not that the insults tossed his way that day were wrong - it's that they were the easy behavior of the mob, thrown out from the comfort of numbers.

As I read, I became less interested in Press' first stories of 1938 Switzerland and 1993 Croatia; those were almost too-easy examples where the moral stand to save lives was clear-cut, and the stakes are high but obvious. As he explains, the whistleblowers and truthseekers in US society face situations where the stakes aren't that clear, and its easy to merely go with the group. Those are more compelling and unsettling examples.

Ultmately, I was on the fence with 4 or 5 stars; for $25, it could be a longer book (I read a free review copy), and does seem like an extended essay. But it's an important book.

This would be a good book for a college class. It's accessible to any student, and the writing and examples are compelling and raise a lot of questions for discussion and further thought.

UPDATED: Some other reviewers have given this two or three stars, mostly for it's lack of depth. I can understand their point - BUT, I think this is an accessible, very well-written account that might serve as an introduction (like I note about college students), but I could see that if you've read a lot of books on this subject, this might not bring much new to your knowledge. I think I've explained why I was very impressed with it.

Great stories, but frustrating lack of motivation

Eyal Press' Beautiful Souls is a collection of 4 biographical sketches of those who made decisions to resist against morally questionable situations. While the sketches are both inspiring and saddening, Press makes the mistake of focusing a book on a fundamental question of "What made these people stand up for the right thing?" and then not attempting to answer it. While still a good read, the frustrating lack of work on motivation gives this 3 stars.

Press tells the tale of 4 people who did what they considered the right thing under trying circumstances - a Swiss border guard who smuggled Jews in against policy, a Serbian who misidentified Croats to save them from torture, an Israeli commando who refused to continue to protect what he felt were illegal settlements, and a broker who caught wind of a Ponzi scheme - walks the reader through their stories, and interviews the 3 living subjects. The stories themselves are both inspirational and saddening, since one conclusion about the consequences of such actions is a quote by a former Guantanamo Bay prosecutor: "(Individual dissenters) don't bring about change. You only bring pain on yourself." That seems to be one of the darker underlying themes, but the flip side is the other conclusion reached - that "(perhaps you achieve your) own salvation" from making the right moral choice.

What Press doesn't do as well is to answer his own initial question. While he does debunk some of the common stereotypes about those who make moral choices, ultimately he does a fairly poor job of explaining why these people in particular decided to stand up to a larger wrong. Part of his problem comes from attempt to use individual case studies to make much larger points, another is that he doesn't include more academic material outside of the older, more prominent studies on the subject, and the final is that the book could have used a bit more editing to take away what feels like an often meandering course to its conclusion.

Brief, But Inspiring

Beautiful Souls: Saying No, Breaking Ranks, and Heeding the Voice of Conscience in Dark Times

I was in one sense inspired and in another frustrated by what I read in this wonderful little book, Beautiful Souls. I say "little book" not in the cliché', pompous manner in which some amateurs review films, but in the sense that the book is very short about 66,500 words. Small though it is, it was packed with the two emotions/factors in line one of this review.

I was inspired to know that there are more people on earth from time to time, which do the right thing, though they appear in dire short supply these days, much unlike our ancestors of "The Greatest Generation."

What I loved about this book were the examples of those people who threw precaution to the wind and followed their conscience, despite the dangers afoot for them, as the authors of Eyal Press' examine the following four examples of people of varying social status taking uncommon risks to carry out the demands upon them by their conscience not only for empathy, but actions which fulfill the needs of those in danger.

1)- Disobeying The Law: Paul Grüninger Commander Of State Police in St. Gallen Switzerland displays incredible courage in, "Disobeying The Law" by allowing Sanctuary to Jewish escapees from the Nazi Scourge in 1938.

2)- Defying The Group: In 1991 Revolution, Alecsander Jevtic', a Serb, in charge of identifying Croats seeking asylum, knowing full well that any Croats found would be murdered in the ensuing genocide, began passing them off, as Serb refugees.

3)- Rules of Conscience: Aven Wishnitzer, a weak, skinny kid becomes a member of the Sayeret Matkal, "the Unit" a highly trained and competent warrior Army group member and yet he becomes a force objecting to the Jewish encroacher's, mistreatment of Palestinians within the occupied territories in 2000.

4)- The Price of Raising One's Voice: A highly successful, female Broker/Bonus Baby, ($150,000 signing bonus) of the Stanford Group Company, Leyla Wydlera, studies with due-diligence the CD's she is pressured into selling, uncovers and fights against one of the schemes which added a millstone to the already bursting DOT-COM bubble of Wall Street Market in in 2000, creating yet a further problem in 2002.

Herein Eyal Press digs through the corruption carefully covered-up heroics of four Beautiful souls who refused to be intimidated by corrupt superiors, and say NO to corruption, though it ruins the careers of some of them.

The writer unravels studies that try to explain why and how these people did what others would not do. Some of them intimmate that morality, religion, honor etc. had nothing to do with the decision to ignore convention and rebel, saying that it is much easier to do so when one is not removed from face to face witnessing of the horrendous results of their actions those whose lives will be destroyed by governmental or corporate crimes. They say anyone in the same situation might have done the same thing. In other studies they indicate that as long as superiors say they will take the responsibility for evil done, the underlings who carry out the evil deeds will not be held responsible. These studies seem to dehumanize the actions of superb and courageous men and women, as situational and a thing anyone would do under the same circumstances.

This is of course not true, sadistic people live at every level of society and do horrific things every day. People such as serial killers, rapists and sadists, who have no superiors directing them and are there staring their victims in the eye when they carry out their brutality. Many people far away from their commanding officers, and who are not removed from the site of slaughters, commit terrible crimes and often find such acts thrilling and laughable. Others regardless of conditions are always bent upon empathy, a trait that is often missing, ignored or denied in many people.

Though the book is extremely well written, early on one wonders about the author's motives because he appears to accept the dispiriting studies which seemed to make heroes a batch of inhumane, behavioral accidents of circumstance. However, Further into the book, the author rejects these studies and agrees that such studies which remove humanity from heroes, completely miss the boat. Taking away heroics is a step toward disavowing the existence of conscience and morality. The Author quotes Ralph Nader's quip, "Whistle Blowers are born not made... They are a breed apart..." It is good to know that when we have done the honorable things we are not alone.

If you are a just person of honor and altruism, you will enjoy this brief look at heroism and the theories behind its sources. However, you may also want to know more and I, for one, wished for more examples of heroes, as well interviews with philosophers, clergy, educators, union, civil rights advocates and other people who made unselfish and heroic sacrifices with no reward, and in fact, many of whom suffered greatly by their efforts.
