Coming from a rabid D. Johnson fan, plays are not his forte.

So if you're into plays, there are many contemporary playwrights out there that deserve to be given precedence over Johnson.

That being said, the plays are still Denis-Johnson witty and reward the reader with intelligent pages, but fall short of making an overall impression.

The plays in this book feature a couple introduced in Shoppers: Two Plays, a family ,and a talking-TV, among others.

Very Fine

Sontag has once again compiled an intelligent collection of essays on widely varying aesthetic topics. Though she begins with a rather artificial and patronizing obituary for the late man of letters Paul Goodman, whose body of work she is evidently less than enthused with, though she feels obliged to compare him to Sartre. The essay rings of false piety.

She moves into an expansive and favorable essay on Antonin Artaud, the great playwright and artist of the avant-garde movement. Sontag reviews the developments of his great career within the context of moralistic philosophic aesthetics, liking him with Nietzsche, then Sade, then Breton.

Yet the most impressive essay in Under the Sign is titled `Fascinating Fascism,' and it is truly fascinating. In it, Sontag overviews the work of filmmaker, actress, and photographer Leni Riefenstahl, the Nazi propagandist whose body of work includes the esteemed documentaries Triumph of the Will, and Olympia, the latter about the 1936 Olympic games. Sontag reviews Riefenstahl's book of photography on the Nuba tribe in Sudan, which is apparently breathtaking. Sontag concludes that Reifenstahl, despite her `de-Nazification' and renunciation of her political past is still enamored with a fascist ideal, valuing the masculine strength of the male Nuba and placing their bodies in the foreground, while the women remain vulnerable and tucked away in shadowy corners. The essay is highly provocative.

The title essay is about the great philosopher and literary critic Walter Benjamin, whom she reviews favorably. This essay provides some interesting tidbits of information that Hannah Arendt neglects to include in her introduction, such as Benjamin's apparent hatred for Heidegger's philosophy.

Also included in this volume is an excellent and terse review of Roland Barthes, and the fine novelist Elias Canetti, whom she holds in great esteem.

This volume has been reread by me more than once. Sontag explains that her piece on Paul Goodman is being written in a small room in Paris. The author states she was not a friend of Goodman, although several of their worlds coincided with each other. She admired Goodman's work immensely. She describes his voice as cranky, egotistical, American. She finds him comparable, a unique voice, to D.H. Lawrence. Goodman wrote poetry, plays, novels, and social criticism. After the publication of GROWING UP ABSURD in 1960 Goodman was no longer an obscure writer. Sontag complains that he was often taken for granted, even by his admirers. She deems his amateurism identical with his genius.

Susan Sontag asserts that Antonin Artaud failed in his work and his life. His work consisted of a vast collection of fragments. Artaud described intellectual distress. He considered consciousness as process. A leading theme was the link between suffering and writing. All of Artaud's writing was in the first person. He welcomed Surrealism. Artaud's idea of revolution diverged from the Surrealists. He started in poetry. By 1926 in his search for the total art form, Artaud was doing theatrical work. Sontag holds that Artaud offers the greatest quantity of suffering in literature.

The author produces a devastating analysis of the pretensions of Leni Riefenstahl. Sontag's discussion of Alpine movie epics is engaging. Riefenstahl is identified with the Nazi era. Sontag contends that her pbotography book, THE LAST OF THE NUBA, completed thirty years after that era continued to exemplify Nazi ideology.

Walter Benjamin is the subject of the title essay. Benjamin found Saturnine elements in Baudelaire, Proust, Karl Kraus, and even Goethe. To him, subject to melancholy, solitutde appeared to be the fit state of man. Benjamin collected emblem books. His relations with others were complex, veiled. Benjamin felt an affinity to the baroque and the Surreal. He had a microscopic gaze. Benjamin was a wanderer and a collector. By miniaturizing things they became portable. Benjamin wrote that the melancholic permits himself the pleasure of allegory. His characteristic form was the essay.

The piece on Elias Canetti stresses the writer's acquisition of languages. German became the language of his mind. As a child he had spoken Ladino. He had a taste for fanciful blends of knowledge. Canetti was rather close to Freud in technique and interests, but not Freudian. Sontag describes CROWDS AND POWER as an eccentric book.

The essays in this volume are both serious and lively.

Susan Sontag is "highbrow." Her essays have scope and intellectual ambition, which readers who have an allergy to these qualities may find "pretentious." She can almost mercilessly point out when something is derivative, weakly conceived, or a sell-out. She has a commitment to cinema as High Art; she takes the contemporary novel to task for being complacent and reactionary; she has a particularly sharp eye for intellectual fraud. Readers who are only interested in marching under one banner or another, or come equipped with biases or blind spots they are proud of, will probably find her annoying.
Sontag may be guilty of "neglecting to take into consideration" entertainment or commercial value, but I'm not sure why it necessarily is a requirement for her to take these things into consideration, since so many others are happily doing so. The fact that a film enjoyed great commercial value does not necessarily exempt it from being an example of "fascist aesthetics"; it simply may mean that it was a fantastically successful example of fascist aesthetics. Sontag was writing at a time when many used the word "fascism" in a very kneejerk way, as though it was this mysterious bad thing, an unknowable plague. Sontag doesn't allow herself such a simplistic attitude. She shows that in fact fascism has many attractive aspects, which is why its aesthetic still turns up everywhere, from Michael Jackson videos to Pink Floyd's The Wall to the WWF. I'm not sure she necessarily thinks this a bad thing; Americans, as we always like to remind the world, are free to enjoy whatever we enjoy, but at least we should not be dishonest about giving things their true names.
The judgement that this writer is a product of "1960s anti-establisment, feminist movement that views anything organized or male-oriented as fascist" is just a inaccurate, vague generalization whose purpose is to dismiss Sontag without having really read or thought about what she is saying. Sontag has skewered "anti-establishment types" and various feminists with the same lack of mercy she dispenses to Arthur Miller and Norman Mailer. Nobody's obligated to read Sontag or like the kind of criticism she practices. But for anyone really interested in cinema, art, theater, the novel, and related subjects, she's essential.

Sam Lipsyte is the author of Venus Drive, The Subject Steve, Home Land, and The Ask, the latter two New York Times Notable Books, and, most recently, The Fun Parts. He won the first annual Believer Book Award and was a 2008 Guggenheim Fellow. He teaches writing at Columbia University's School of the Arts.

Thoughtful, energetic prose

One of the ironies regarding Sam Lipsyte's work is that a man who has written three novels and two short story collections since 2000 is often called literature's king of slackers. But if you read his work, you can see how he got that reputation. From the drug-addled protagonists of VENUS DRIVE, his first book of stories, to the doughnut-wolfing development officer in his 2010 novel, THE ASK, Lipsyte's characters are potty-mouthed shirkers and grumps, most of them male, who have difficulty with alcohol, illegal drugs, fidelity, or some combination of the three.

These chronic malcontents would be unbearable in the hands of an inexpert writer. But a constant joy of Lipsyte's stories is that they offer more than just a litany of complaints and ineffectual responses. His prose can be surprisingly lyrical, and in THE FUN PARTS, his new collection of short fiction, Lipsyte gives starring roles to characters with whom you might not expect him to empathize.

Some of the best and most vivid writing in this collection is in the first three stories, all of which were originally published in The New Yorker. "The Climber Room" is the story of Tovah Gold, a 36-year-old pre-K teacher who yearns to write poetry. She adores the children at the Sweet Apple school where she teaches but until recently hasn't wanted a child of her own. One of her favorite children at the school is Dezzy Gautier, whose father, Randy, made a fortune in the software industry and is one of the school's biggest donors. When Randy hears of Dezzy's affection for Tovah, he demands that the school change Tovah's hours so that she will be on duty whenever Dezzy is at school. Tovah's outrage over Randy's actions doesn't stop her from accepting the lucrative side job of watching Dezzy one Saturday while a tuxedo-clad Randy attends an unspecified society function. The writing in "The Climber Room" has moments of disarming tenderness among its more outrageous passages. What could have been an exercise in bitterness turns into a thoughtful meditation on life's inevitable disappointments. As Randy says of himself and Tovah near the end of the story, "We're grown up and broken, just like everybody else."

The protagonist of "Deniers," the best story in the book, is Mandy Gottlieb, a 30-year-old woman who teaches cardio ballet at the Jewish Community Center in her New Jersey town. Her father, Jacob, is a Holocaust survivor who now lives in a nursing home and asks after his dead wife every time Mandy visits. Like her ex-boyfriend, Craig, Mandy is a recovering drug addict. After one of Mandy's ballet classes, a young man in a hooded sweatshirt comes on to her in the hope that she can help him reconcile his skinhead past. The title applies to all the principals in the story, each of whom yearns to airbrush the horrors, self-inflicted or otherwise, out of his or her life.

Other stories in THE FUN PARTS are more typical Lipsyte fare but are equally accomplished. "The Dungeon Master" is the story of tensions among teenage Dungeons & Dragons participants, the leader of whom is rumored to have once hit another kid with a baseball bat and to have shown a propensity for flashing strangers. "This Appointment Occurs in the Past" is about a 30ish man who is having an affair with his ex-girlfriend's married mother (shades of the Woody Allen story "Retribution") and visits a fellow stoner college friend who claims to be dying. In "The Worm in Philly," an unemployed man with a drug habit decides to write a children's book about the boxer Marvelous Marvin Hagler and enlists the help of a stoner buddy's sister, an editor who is interested in the narrator for more than just his book proposal. And "The Wisdom of the Doulas" features a male doula with attitude, drug problems and a unique method for helping a demanding client clear her milk ducts.

Did you notice all the drug addicts among the book's characters? The biggest weakness in THE FUN PARTS is its limited range. There are too many people battling drugs and alcohol, too many affairs, too many characters reconciling with aged parents, too many rich patrons pushing around members of the lower socioeconomic classes. The best stories in the book are those in which Lipsyte deviates the furthest from this formula. But he more than makes up for his narrow focus with his gift for one-liners and his thoughtful, energetic prose.

No Ticket to the Game

You won't find inspiring stories of heroes overcoming obstacles to attain undreamed successes here. That's just as well -- these are funny, entertaining, and insightful stories. Lipsyte gives us a lighthearted if defeated world, with its anti-heroes somehow claiming our empathy.

Much of the world of these stories is populated by people for whom the world is just unconquerable. It's not because they have played the game and couldn't quite win, but because they really just couldn't find their way into the game at all.

One example is the protagonist of The Worm in Philly. He's a down-and-outer with a big idea, writing a children's book about the boxer Marvin Hagler. There's nothing disastrous about the idea -- it's too ludicrous to be a disaster. He knows nothing about Hagler that he hasn't learned by a quick trip to the library, before meeting his prospective agent. He pitches his idea. We know it's going nowhere. The only question is why an agent would agree to meet with him. It's not that it's a bad idea -- it doesn't even rise high enough to be a bad idea. The agent isn't even there to listen to it. It isn't a crushing defeat for the would-be writer -- after all, he was never in the game anyway.

Many of Lipsyte's characters are like this. People without an admission ticket. He tells his stories with empathy and humor. We all know what it's like not to be admitted to the game. It kind of makes us all the brothers we wished we never had.

Very talented short story artist!

I understand that beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but for short story lovers who also admire the beauty and poetry of language, this book is one of the best I have ever read, and I have read many. Sam Lipsyte can be hysterical and heartbreaking in the same sentence; one moment I am laughing so hard I am crying, and in the next I am just crying. Aside from the emotions evoked, the choice of words, the minimalist execution is truly a talent that few writers are able to pull off. Worth reading!!

Mother Superior, you're all wet - no really, I mean it

Life With Mother Superior was one of my favorite books when I was growing up. Having been educated by nuns myself, I really enjoyed the antics in the memoir. I wish my school days had only been half as fun. Really. Going to school was like heading toward a torture chamber every day and paying the diocese for the privilege. I was anticipating getting the book as it has been about 40 years since I last read it. It is no longer in print and is very hard to find. Unfortunately, the dealer from whom I purchased it e-mailed me and said it had been in her car and was lost in a flash flood. She reimbursed me my money. So, I am still on the lookout for another copy and hoping when I find it, another natural disaster doesn't strike. Or maybe it was divine intervention.

Held up well for the passage of time

I replaced my old paperback copy with the hardcover. I read this many years ago and enjoyed it just as much on this read thru. If you have watched the Hayley Mills movie 'The Trouble with Angels' and enjoyed it, this has more detail in a similarly fun manner.
The story is semi-autobiographical about a young girl thrust into a Catholic girls' school, her antics with her partner-in-crime and their battles with Mother Superior.

Set in the Roaring Twenties, when spiritualism was all the rage, this novel starring a fortune teller's daughter has some spine-tingling moments, but readers may be disappointed by the slow-moving plot and hazy explanations of unusual events. The story begins when Greer's mother, Madame Camille, is hired to perform a series of seances for a wealthy widower. Greer is excited at the prospect of spending the summer in Mr. Caldecott's stately mansion overlooking Long Island Sound; however, she does not look forward to sharing the house with her mother's conniving manager, Drake Morley, who wants Greer to help him spice up Madame Camille's act with some cheap gimmicks ("You're going to turn my mother into a fraud. A cheap charlatan!" the heroine says). While Morley clearly plays the role of the villain, other characters remain enigmatic, if not inconsistent. Madame Camille's relationships with her daughter and her implied string of suitors and/or managers remain sketchily drawn. Mr. Caldecott comes across as an unconvincing mix of wisdom and gullibility. Greer, herself, is also somewhat ambiguous; although gifted with the ability to "see" people's auras, she acts surprisingly down-to-earth, relying on logic rather than instinct to outwit the despicable Mr. Morley. Karr's fans may do better sticking with her earlier novels, such as The Great Turkey Walk and Man of the Family. Ages 10-up.

Gr 5-8-A fast-paced tale set in 1924. Madame Camille is clairvoyant, and her 14-year-old daughter, Greer, sees auras. Camille, mesmerized by the magician and charlatan Drake Morley, the latest in a series of "uncles," moves with her daughter to the Long Island estate of a wealthy and lonely widower, Amos Caldecott, who longs to make contact with his late wife. Greer makes friends with Leo and Peg Rafferty, the cook's teenaged children, and with them she learns to swim and sail. Unfortunately, her happiness in these typical adolescent pursuits is overshadowed by Drake's stagecraft manipulations of her mother's s‚ances and Greer's buried memories of carnival life. The teen's powers as a medium turn out to be far stronger than anyone anticipated, and in the midst of a hurricane, she summons evil powers that reveal terrible secrets about the carnival and Drake Morley. Greer, Leo, and Peg are appealing characters who, with humor and grace, confront adult situations and develop into independent young adults; the adult characters, however, are less multidimensional. The story is marred by contrived plotting that includes a failed murder attempt, a comic-opera rescue by Mr. Rafferty, and the nervous breakdown and subsequent madness of Drake Morley. Gr. 5-7. Karr, who has written several historical novels, picks as her topic the spiritualist movement in New York, during the 1920s. Greer's mother, Madame Camille, can see the future, at least some of the time. Actually, it is Greer who sees auras, and she knows that the aura of Drake Morely, the latest in a long string of "uncles," looks dangerous for both her and her mother. Morely takes them to a mansion on Long Island, where the owner, Mr. Caldecott, is interested in holding seances. For Greer, the place turns out to be a refuge: she meets new friends and Mr. Caldecott becomes a benefactor. There is also trouble as Greer finds herself calling up unwanted spirits and in mortal danger from Morely. The narrative seems forced in places, and the plot elements sometimes don't fit properly (this is particularly true of Morely's disintegration). The characters are more engaging, but what will attract readers most are the story's occult underpinnings. For larger collections. Ilene Cooper

A great book for those who love the beauty of the hills!!

This book gives you a spectacular, vivid, and unique look at the mountains of New England as only Thoreau could provide. This book is a compilation of peak-by-peak short stories which include Thoreaus' own journal writings along with commentary by the author. You join Thoreau as he explores many of New England's more famous mountains. Originally published in the 19th Century, Thoreau gives a glimpse of the mountains before roads, well-graded paths, or even maps gave the average tourist easy access to their beautiful heights. Thoreau explores such peaks as Katahdin in Maine, Lafayette, Monadnock, and Washington in New Hampshire, as well as Greylock and Wachusett in his home state of Massachusetts. The author gives modern day reference points as you follow Thoreau on his adventures across New England. Thoreau even teaches, unintentionaly, some important do's and don'ts for the modern day explorer. As you will discover Thoreau even learned a few lessons that can still be seen to this day! Overall, a very interesting read, especially for anyone at home in the mountains of New England. A book sure to bring out the adventurer in you.

Climb every (major New England) mountain

In this book, editor William Howarth compiled Henry David Thoreau's journal accounts of his lifetime excursions to the major mountains of New England. Through these extensive descriptions, we can accompany Thoreau to Wachusett and Greylock in Massachusetts; to Katahdin and Kineo in Maine; and to the Vermont and New Hampshire peaks of Wantastiquet, the Fall Mountains, the White Mountains (Washington, Tuckerman Ravine, Lafayette), and Monadnock. Howarth periodically added sidebars of contemporary geography to the naturalist's words and experiences so that the devoted reader could have directions to attempt to retrace the 19th-century naturalist's steps. Obviously Howarth did the hikes himself. But we discover through Howarth's notes that sometimes Thoreau wasn't even sure of his location. Sometimes he flat out misidentified landmarks or tree species. Therein lies part of the fun, of course: correcting historical documentation. We can also see how the New England landscape has changed over the past century and a half. Still, it's interesting to read about the way it was and to share in Thoreau's continual wonder at the natural world.

This volume has been updated by a newer edition called "Walking with Thoreau: A Literary Guide to the New England Mountains." Either book is especially recommended for hikers.

About the Author

Eleanor Henderson's novel Ten Thousand Saints was named one of the Top 10 Books of the Year by The New York Times and was a finalist for a Los Angeles Times Book Prize. An assistant professor of fiction writing at Ithaca College, she lives in Ithaca, New York, with her husband and two sons. Anna Solomon's debut novel, The Little Bride, was a Boston Globe bestseller. Her stories and essays have appeared in The New York Times Magazine, More, One Story, Ploughshares, and elsewhere, and have twice been awarded the Pushcart Prize. She teaches at Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island, where she lives with her husband, daughter, and son.

a beautifully-written, often sad, but ultimately redeeming collection of essays

The basics: Labor Day: True Birth Stories by Today's Best Women Writers, edited by Eleanor Henderson and Anna Solomon, brings together an impressive group of contemporary female writers from a variety of genres to share their experiences giving birth. The essays are as varied as the women who write them.

My thoughts: Admittedly, before I got pregnant (and even early on in my pregnancy), I shied away from birth stories. Rarely do I favor ignorance, but in this case, I was scared of labor and childbirth, yet I knew I would be going through it, and I wasn't ready to deal with it. At some point in my pregnancy, I became eager for birth stories. I'm still frightened, of course, but I find comfort in imagining myself in a variety of different scenarios, both the positive and negative.

I'll be honest: this collection of essays often veers to the negative and sad. There are some heart-breaking stories told in these pages. I shed many, many tears as I read, yet even the most heart-breaking essays, I found a sense of comfort and kinship with the writers. These strong, beautiful voices moved me with their tales of the times before, during and after birth. To combine such intimate details about life, birth, and new motherhood with beautiful language is a true gift.

Favorite passage: "I suppose we are always alone in our pain, but we are rarely positioned appropriately to view the isolation accurately. Most of the choices with which we are presented in childbirth are secondary to the one most important in practice we must be prepared to labor alone, even in the company of others, even with the brilliantly blinding help of loved ones. Perhaps the debates regarding child birth are so he did because in the end it’s one woman’s experience, not a shared cultural phenomenon. It’s you and your pain; it’s you and it’s your baby.” --Sarah A. Strickley

The verdict: This collection is superb. While some essays are objectively better than others, only one rang hollow for me. While I connected more deeply with some than others, I appreciated and gained something from each one. I'll be giving this book to many, many pregnant friends in the years to come.

Please Don't Read This if You are Pregnant

This book is disappointing and dark. The writers are not the "best" women writers, and by two thirds through the book the essays got boring. Epidurals and pitocin. Most of these births are hospital births and it seems like the doctors and residents take control of the woman's labor instead of allowing the body to labor in its own rhythm. I carried two children to term and one of my babies died. I am no stranger to heartbreak and loss, but this book for the most part does not offer hope. I found a lot of it to be cold and I am longing for a spiritual perspective of life-changing pregnancy and birth. I came to this book after reading Arielle Greenberg and enjoyed her essay very much. Nuar Alsadir and Cheryl Strayed, Sarah A. Strickley, Gina Zucker also write compelling essays. We think that by reading books about life that we can prepare ourselves. We get the message here: You cannot prepare for labor and a newborn. However, I wonder what the editors were thinking in terms of the big trajectory of the book. What is its overall message? A space to tell stories of labor is important, but what kind of message are we giving women who are pregnant? I am doing research and writing a book about pregnancy after a fatal "diagnosis" so I am reading a lot of difficult material, yet there is usually hope. One in four pregnancies end in miscarriage, stillbirth or infant death. This is part of our story and humanity, but what we do with our grief and our experiences is life changing. The lack of spirituality in most of these essays makes the book more clinical for me and I cannot recommend it overall.

Difficult, but a great read

After reading a couple excerpts that were posted in online magazines, I decided to order the book. It's great to hear the good, the bad, and the ugly of delivery. Often, when any book discusses a birth story, it is to illustrate a point (ex. someone wants to prove home birth is a good idea, cue home birth story). This book has less of an agenda, and so it is a better way to just learn about how many different families have experienced birth. Reading some of the stories really releived my stress about choosing the right doctor, practice, birth plan, etc., because I read about how many different people all made it through even though they had different plans.
Also, in the introduction they list a couple of the stories which might be upsetting to pregnant mothers (miscarriage stories), so it is clear which ones to skip if you are prone to worry.

From the time they met in 1947 at a party thrown by their mutual friend and poet, Randall Jarrell, through the end of Lowell's life in 1977, the pair—who saw each other rarely but considered themselves intimate friends—maintained a steady correspondence about literature and their turbulent lives and their own complicated, at times flirtatious friendship. Lowell was manic-depressive and embroiled in two volatile marriages, while Bishop also suffered depression and more than her share of loss, including the suicide of her longtime lover. Many of their now famous letters, previously available in separate volumes, appear here in one volume, their exchanges preserved in the order they were sent and received. How much one enjoys this volume—300 of the letters here have never before been published—depends on how much one embraces the poetry and lives of Lowell and Bishop. The critics themselves were quite pleased, often strutting out prose with a faintly purple hue in honor of these two postwar poetry giants. Of course, there's a great deal of wit to go around—the usual savaging of colleagues and the mockery of modern society; Bishop takes the road less traveled and even flings some mud at old Robert Frost. A few critics called for stricter editing, given the inclusion of letters detailing dental appointments and job applications. But the unrequited love between Bishop and Lowell redeems any hint of banality; instead, Words in Air is an inspiring lifelong conversation between two great poets.

Love of Poetry

This correspondence is one long (nearly a thousand pages) love letter between two of the best poets of their generation. Both Elizabeth Bishop and Robert Lowell were personally tortured by their demons (her was alcohol, his was manic-depression) and failed relationships. Though never lovers, their's was a marriage of the minds via the mail for thirty years. It is helpful, though not vital, that the reader be acquainted with their poetry -- the letters have more meaning and one can understand the fuss they had with their written creations. This definiative collection of their letters is a biography of their adult lives.

bedtime reading

This has been my bedtime reading for a month now and what a lovely way to end the day.

They lived apart, continents apart, but close in spirit. Their letters are gossipy, smart, unguarded, critical of each others' work, supportive through triumphs and awful trials. They say things to each other that they never would have voiced aloud. (Sometimes they get catty, and mostly they are right.)

As their careers progress, you follow a poem by poem progression. The letters made me aware of the extent to which their poems were written in response to the work of the other, and the importance of their prose and translation to the poems for which they are now famous.

It's a nice book too, a good design, and a fine thing in hand. My only complaint is that the footnotes (which are fascinating) are printed in a tiny font that's almost too small for my tired eyes.

The best thing I've read in a very long time

I spent two and a half years reading Words In Air - reading fifty- or hundred-page chunks between other books - and I think it is the best thing I have read in a very long time. I knew nothing about Elizabeth Bishop or Robert Lowell when I entered their thirty year correspondence (I just like books of letters) and I got to know them, their brilliant poems, their debilitating faults, and the lives of poets (or some poets) from the 1940's to the 1970's. I spent more time than I ever expected trying to understand a defense of Ezra Pound, I researched their favorite books (including Bishop's favorite 19th Century animal fiction, Rolf in the Woods), I listened to the classical pieces they referenced (or dwelt on), I found the Google Street View of their past residences. I didn't become obsessed but - when I was in the book - I felt somehow enmeshed in those two lives. Books of letters leave things out: while reading the very last letter of Words In Air I discovered a rather important bit of gossip about Bishop and American literature that either was glossed over or I missed a few hundred pages earlier. So when some time passes, maybe a few years, I'm going to reopen the book and start again, picking up the pieces I missed and reliving these two lives.
