About the Author
Claudia Roth Pierpont is a staff writer for The New Yorker, where she has written about the arts for more than twenty years. The subjects of her articles have ranged from James Baldwin to Katharine Hepburn, from Machiavelli to Mae West. A collection of Pierpont's essays on women writers, Passionate Minds: Women Rewriting the World, was published in 2000 and was nominated for a National Book Critics Circle Award. Pierpont has been the recipient of a Whiting Writers' Award, a Guggenheim Fellowship, and a fellowship at the Cullman Center for Scholars and Writers of the New York Public Library. She has a PhD in Italian Renaissance art history from New York University. She lives in New York City.

A Writer's Life Through his Books

Claudia Roth Pierpont's Roth Unbound blends a critical appraisal of each of Philip Roth's books--from Goodbye Columbus (1959) to Nemesis (2010)--with historical and biographical context. She draws on extensive interviews with the author as well as letters and other unpublished documents to which she has had access. Although she is a friend of Philip Roth, and one to whom he has shown drafts of his work in progress, this is not an "authorized biography." As Pierpont (no relation to Roth) makes clear at the outset, Philip Roth "[did] not read a single word in advance of publication."
The result is meticulously researched and gorgeously written. Pierpont's readings of individual novels are subtle and illuminating (and she does not pull punches). For instance, her lyrical chapter on the Ghost Writer (1979), a turning point in Roth's career, compares the structure of the book to that of a chamber quartet. But I have learned as much from her historical evocation of the world from which Roth issued, and of the successive historical and cultural contexts of his personal struggles. Pierpont is as able a historian and biographer as a literary critic. What touches me most about this book is its deep humanity--which manifests in Pierpont's affinity for her subject, in her subtle ability to blend attention life and letters without any trace of prurient curiosity, and above all in her pursuit of the larger goal of investigating the challenges and achievements of one of the most extraordinary creative lives in modern America. I know few explorations of the life of the artist as nuanced, as probing and as humane as this one.

A Man and His Books

Relatively few writers use details from their personal lives in their fiction more than Philip Roth does in his. And that is exactly what makes Claudia Roth Pierpont’s Roth Unbound: A Writer and His Books so potentially fascinating.
Roth Unbound is not as much biography as it is literary criticism of one man’s entire writing career. Book by book, Pierpont examines everything written by Roth, from his best known and most successful novels, to his lesser known and least successful ones. What’s more, despite being a personal friend of Roth’s for a decade or so, Pierpont pulls no punches. She points out very clearly what she considers to be problems with many of his books and, in each of these instances, provides a detailed argument to build her case.
Readers hoping for details about Roth’s personal life, including how he constructs his novels and comes up with his plot lines will not be disappointed. Pierpont ‘s access to Roth, and his apparent willingness to share intimate details of his past with her for the book, exposes Roth’s past to much second-guessing on the part of readers and critics, alike. It is all part of what makes Philip Roth and his books so special to so many people, but it is also what makes certain segments of society (feminists, in particular) dislike him so intensely.
Although I own the entire Library of America collection of Roth’s work, I have not read all of his books yet, and frankly, if I were a reader new to Philip Roth, Roth Unbound might not encourage me to read them at all. Pierpont is just that honest and revealing about the shortcomings of some of Roth’s writing, books in which he was still struggling to find his voice or with which he somehow went completely off track. But she is quick to praise the brilliance of his best work and Roth, after all, is one of the finest and most important writers of the last sixty years.
So, do read Philip Roth. Use Roth Unbound to get some insight into the man who wrote the books, what was going on in his life when he wrote them, and into the books themselves. This is an excellent addition to the personal library of any reader of twentieth and twenty-first century fiction.

A well-balanced, intimate look at the great American writer

ROTH UNBOUND explores the literary life of one of America’s greatest 20th-century writers, Philip Roth. Author Claudia Roth Pierpont combines personal history with textual analysis to create a complex narrative that exists somewhere between the genres of biography and artistic exposition. She embraces the thin line between the artist and the individual, though, with Roth in particular, one could argue that the two personas are one and the same.
Pierpont is careful with her biographical disclosures. She reveals only what she deems relevant to the interpretation of Roth’s books. She attaches just enough muscle to bone so that the book feels animated and moves along at an engaging pace, yet refrains from piling on the gossipy fat of a tell-all biography. Pierpont illustrates how Roth relies heavily on his own experiences for the content and characters of his novels. However, she is also adamant that his books stand alone as works of fiction in their own right, still meaningful even when divorced from their author.
The author methodically moves through each of Roth’s books, from GOODBYE COLUMBUS to NEMESIS, providing analysis, historical context, and a fascinating account of what it means to be a literary figure in modern America. A meticulous and confident writer, Pierpont is deeply sympathetic to her subject. Roth submitted to interviews for this book, and she interweaves his retrospective commentary into her record of his works. She is especially gifted at responding to criticisms of Roth’s work. Instead of lambasting them, she winks at the reader, often bringing a refreshing levity to criticism that has been worn thin by overuse: “[Roth] is still unlikely to linger over a landscape… You didn’t think you were going to get a whole sentence about the luminous moon, did you?”
Pierpont does not defend him or lob a counterattack, wisely spending her energies constructing a contextual framework around Roth’s books and planting each in its particular time and place. With I MARRIED A COMMUNIST, a novel that was generally viewed as a scathing response to the memoir of Roth’s ex-wife, Claire Bloom, Pierpont pragmatically points out that “there is a long if not quite noble tradition of literary revenge, from D. H. This sort of scaffolding pays off. By the end of the book, Roth appears softened, while his work comes into sharp focus as a truly indispensable part of the American literary cannon.
In ROTH UNBOUND, Pierpont gives us a well-balanced, intimate look at the great American writer. The irony, of course, is that in doing so, she has revealed herself to be the type of intelligent, even-minded and competently ambitious woman whom Roth could never seem to get right in his fiction. Roth himself should take note: this type of irony is ripe for a story. A savvy female biographer giving an author a new coat of paint? Sounds like a perfect ending for the Nathan Zuckerman saga if ever I heard one.
