The centerpiece of this intellectual history is a vicious late-17th-century debate between three unlikely combatants: Leibniz, an amateur metaphysicist and German secret agent; Malebranche, a gentle French priest and theologian; and Arnauld, an ill-tempered and opinionated monk. The differences in their positions were slight but important: at stake was the very concept of God with potential implications for the territorial wars between various Catholic Church sects. Although the three men were concentrating on questions that had long been the subject of philosophical inquiry, new scientific discoveries were beginning to challenge the power invested in church and monarchy in what became a watershed moment. Nadler (Rembrandt's Jews) demonstrates why the contentious discussions between the three intellectuals remain relevant: "To the extent that one believes that there is a universal rationality and objectivity to moral and other value judgments, and that the foundations of ethics have nothing to do with what God may or may not want, one has followed in certain seventeenth-century footsteps." Applying reason to the world's most perplexing questions -- the nature of God, the problem of evil in the world, the meaning of our own existence -- isn't easy. That hasn't stopped philosphers from pondering those conundrums from the earliest days of recorded history, however. In the 17th century, the questions were well-known, but the evolution of scientific knowledge was starting to transform the ways in which they were addressed. Meanwhile, the conclusions philospohers reached could literally result in matters of life and death in the midst of a violent century where the conflict between Catholic and Protestant theologians reached a violent climax.
Writing about philosophical concepts is, perhaps, even less simple; perhaps that is one reason that much of such work has been penned by scholars and directed at other scholars. Thankfully, Steven Nadler, already the author of several books devoted to Spinoza and other 17th century thinkers, has decided to target this book at a more general audience, and succeeds in making it just accessible enough (although it remains a challenging read).
The focus of the book is the effort by German philosopher Gottfried Leibniz to tackle one of those key questions: why does a world designed by God contain so much apparently random evil and misfortune? Why do virtuous and pious people fall victim to these woes? In the final decades of pre-Englightenment philosophy, such theological quandaries established a framework for moral reasoning that exists to this day. And Leibniz's reasoning that God had indeed created the best of all possible worlds (if not the world that best suited each of its inhabitants) was one that shook up the 17th century philosophical landscape.
But Nadler's real contribution isn't just rehashing Leibniz's thinking, but showing how such philosophical breakthroughs are reached. The popular conception of a philosopher locking himself in a room and isolating himself and his brain from the rest of the world could not be further from the truth. Instead, Nadler shows how Leibniz reacted to traditional Aristotlean thinking, to the Cartesian revolution and to Spinoza's radical arguments. In particular, he focuses on the ways in which two French Catholic religious figures -- Antoine Arnauld and Nicolas Malebranche -- first encountered during a four-year sojurn in Paris in the 1670s played an ongoing role in the shaping of Leibniz's own contributions to the philsophical debate. Through letters among the trio, the ways in which they responded to each others' ideas in their published works and other documentary records, Nadler has managed to capture the flavor of the intellectual environment of the time and shown the reader how such cross-fertilization can prove vital to the philosphical as well as the creative process.
It's a compelling narrative, especially for those with a thorough grounding in Western philosphical history. I am not, alas, among that group and did find myself having to pause and retrace some of the details of the philosophical arguments that Nadler details and analyzes. But careful re-reading was productive, and this reader, at least, emerged after a week of solid reading with a far greater comprehension of not only the tenets of Leibniz's thinking but an understanding of their implications.
This isn't an easy read, by any means (for a still more accessible approach to Leibniz, in my view at least, try The Courtier and the Heretic: Leibniz, Spinoza, and the Fate of God in the Modern World]. But for those with time to invest and the interest in following the ways these great minds worked and formed their theories, it's a book that repays the effort it requires to read it.
Perhaps more effort will be made, in the wake of this and other evaluations of this group of philsophers (including [[ASIN:038551753X Descartes' Bones: A Skeletal History of the Conflict between Faith and Reasonto blend history and philosophy for popular readers in other eras or geographies? I'm not aware of a similar approach to the work of Hobbes, Locke and Newston in England at roughly the same point in history, for instance.

_The Best of All Possible Worlds: A Story of Philosophers, God, and Evil_ (2008) by philosopher Steven Nadler is a discerning account of the philosophical problems that plagued philosophers during the 17th century including the problem of God, the problem of evil, and the notion that this world is the best of all possible worlds. In particular, this book focuses on the debates between three important philosophers - the Catholic priest Malebranche, the Jansenist Arnauld, and the Lutheran polymath Leibniz (also a discoverer of the calculus). The book also relates the thoughts of these individuals to the philosophies of the medieval Scholastics (e.g. St. Thomas Aquinas, et al), the rise of Cartesianism, and the philosophical difficulties raised by Spinoza. In particular, the character of Leibniz is important because not only did he seek to promote an ecumenism between the Protestant and Catholic churches, but also for his notion that this world was the best of all possible worlds chosen by God. Nadler maintains that the issues raised by these philosophers were important in that they all sought to take up the "challenge of getting God right". In particular, the problem of evil was the most important issue of the day, and in their efforts to understand this problem it became necessary to question the nature of God and his agency.

This book includes the following chapters:

Leibniz in Paris - begins with the history of France following the Thirty Years War and the conflicts between Catholics and Huegonots in France and explains how Leibniz came to be taken up with the French intellectual scene. Leibniz was a man of a great many interests and a genius of the highest order. In particular, he sought a reconciliation between the churches explaining that "Most objections that can be made against Rome involve the practice of the people rather than the dogmas." Leibniz was to take up the problems of philosophy including the attempt to create a universal "alphabet of human thought" and the culmination of his philosophical understanding in his notions of a "monadology" and a "preestablished harmony". This chapter explains the relationships between Leibniz and his patrons.

Philosophers on the Left Bank - explains the conflict between the old Aristotelians and the new issues raised by Rene Descartes. In particular, Cartesianism proposed a dualism between mind and body and many came to see this philosophy as problematic in that they believed it could not explain the transubstantiation at the eucharist (it was likely for this reason that his books were placed on the Index). The issues raised by Cartesianism came to be taken up by the Catholic priest Malebranche who developed a warm relationship with Leibniz.

Le Grand Arnauld - explains the conflicts that arose between the Jansenists and the more orthodox Catholics. In particular, Jansenism was seen by many as a form of Calvinism within the Catholic church, while Jansenists tended to view the more orthodox Catholics as bordering on Pelagianism. Arnauld was an early Jansenist "solitaire" who developed a relationship with Malebranche in their discussions of the philosophical issues of the day. This three way philosophical discussion forms the basis for this book.

Theodicy - discusses the relationships between Malebranche and the Cartesians and notes the role of Pierre Bayle who was important for Leibniz and who maintained that human reason was incapable of solving the problems of philosophy. In particular, this chapter considers the problem of evil, tracing its development through Augustine, Aquinas, and Maimonides, and finally the understanding of Leibniz that God had chosen the best of all possible worlds. This Leibnizian optimism was seen as hopelessly naïve by many and was mocked by Voltaire in _Candide_ in the character of Dr. Pangloss. Others such as Aquinas had already rejected it maintaining that there could be no such thing as a best of all possible worlds, and it was also rejected by Arnauld.

The Kingdoms of Nature and Grace - explains the role of nature and grace in Malebranche's occasionalism (who also proposed a notion he referred to as the "Vison of God") and the relationship and differences between Malebranche and Leibniz. Also, considers the problem of God's will and how to make sense of God's attributes particularly as this concerned the nature of sin and the problem of evil.

"Touch the Mountains and They Smoke" - examines the conflict between Arnauld and Leibniz and Malebranche concerning divine agency. In particular, this issue concerned the role of grace, and Arnauld was to maintain that there was no distinction between God's will and his wisdom advocating for a form of volitionism as opposed to the occasionalism of Malebranche.

The Eternal Truths - considers the role of piety and the fundamental question - Does God make something because it is good or is something good just because God does it? This question may be seen to have first arisen in Plato's dialogues in the encounter between Socrates and Euthyphro (who maintained that "What is pleasing to the gods is pious, and what is not pleasing to them is impious."). The issue of whether there is a limit to God's omnipotence became an important one particularly as this was to be understood in terms of his other attributes. In particular, it was asked whether God could will a contradiction or violate the laws of mathematics. Many of the Scholastics including Aquinas and Ockham were to maintain that He could not. On the other hand, Descartes advocated a radical notion of deity that would allow God to will a contradiction. This distinction became the issue of absolute divine voluntarism versus divine rationalism. In particular, Arnauld was to maintain God's reasons are not man's reasons and thus reject the notion of a rational God as an anthropomorphization, maintaining instead that God "knows truths only became he wills them to be" and thus rejecting all theodicy. Both Malebranche and Leibniz were to take the more traditional approach that God is bound by rationality in that God's other attributes can only be made sense of if His actions are bounded by practical rationality. This conflict is mirrored in the political conflict between a absolute despotism (where rule is by fiat of the monarch) and a constitutional monarchy (where even the king is bounded by normative constraints), although such notions did not always correspond to the actual politics of their defenders.

The Specter of Spinoza - explains how both these viewpoints taken to their extremes came to be expressed in the heretical philosophy of Spinoza. Spinoza was a Jewish philosopher who had been ex-communicated for his radical views on the traditional Abrahamic God (maintaining in fact that God was synonymous with Nature) and the inerrancy of the Bible (maintaining that the Bible was written by men and not God). Leibniz was to oppose the philosophy of Spinoza as heretical and harmful but was nevertheless to develop a friendship with him. This chapter examines some of the further issues raised by Spinoza's philosophy in relationship to the other three thinkers.

Epilogue - sums up the important issues raised by these philosophers for the philosophy of the 17th century and details the end of their encounters. Arnauld was to undergo a near-death experience and was to subsequently write about it. Leibniz was to remain an optimist until his last days. And, Malebranche was to suffer from a long and severe illness. The issue of divine voluntarism contined to remain problematic for many while the issue of divine and moral rationality came to take on more prominence (culminating in the secular version of this notion in the philosophy of Kant).

This book provides a fascinating examination of the problem of evil, the nature of God, and the issues of theodicy as they arose for these three great thinkers of the 17th century. In light of current debates over the existence of God and His nature, this book provides much interesting material as to how these issues were discussed in that period.

very good history
By a reader
I read many of these primary sources many years ago as a philosophy major. Nadler has done a superb job of weaving philosophy, history, biography into an immensely good read. He shows relations among the philosphers he covers and their arguments that I never noticed before. I sell most of the books I buy on Amazon after I read them, but this one is a keeper.

Fishes are fascinating. Prepare for a great read.

Who would have thought that reading about fishes could be so entertaining and educational? After all, I was taught to believe that a fish is a fish is a fish is a fish, … just automatons peddling water waiting for food and sex, sex and food, food and sex, until they become food to other fishes. Other than different colors and shapes, their lives were unremarkable and just plain boring.

I was so wrong.

In opening Jonathan Balcombe’s book, I fell into "Alice in Wonderland" waters where the characters come to life, - but real life, in an underwater civilization that I didn’t know existed. I set aside all I thought I knew about fishes after reading Chapter 1 – The Misunderstood Fish - which challenged the teachings on which I had based my bias about them.

Balcombe first leads through the basics, the understanding of fishes’ senses of sight, hearing, smell, taste and touch and expanded to added senses of magnetic fields, electricity, and pressure.

Then his really challenging work begins: fishes’ pain, consciousness, awareness, stress, and joy followed by intelligence, tools, planning, and winning competitions with primates. Not one to hold back, Balcombe next leads us to the cultural pages of Fishdom with social contracts and societal cooperation, democracy, and peacekeeping.

Who knew?

I could relax my poor brain a bit when he finally ventured into the sex lives and parenting styles of fishes. (Gone was my long held belief that all female fishes let go of their eggs to wherever the waters took them.)

Before reading the last chapter, I braced myself for a round of proselytizing paragraphs on what is wrong about harming fish leading to a condemnation. But no, as a consummate scientist and brilliant writer, Balcombe simply lays out the facts clearly and calmly of how fishes and fish populations are suffering and how current human actions are irreparably damaging Earth’s underwater world. He has finished walking us through the science.

Now he leaves it up to us to decide what to do.

MASSIVELY excited to receive this beautiful book in the mail today. "What A Fish Knows", by Jonathan Balcombe, pioneers the exciting and exploding field of fish sentience. Dr. Balcombe is the Director for Animal Sentience at The Humane Society Institute for Science and Policy and is one of the planet's leading nonhuman animal behaviorists.

I never liked fishing, even as a small child. My gut instinct told me something was very wrong with this. But did that stop me from eating fish and crustaceans and other aquatic animals for 37 years? No. Our culture - which, as most of us now know, is heavily dictated by corporations and their lobbying and marketing agendas - brainwashed and desensitized me to the pain and suffering of these complex, social, feeling and highly aware beings. Just because they don't scream does not mean they don't suffer. We now know they do. Just because they don't look or act like us, does not mean that they don't experience the entire range of emotions just like us. We now know they do. It wasn't until I awoke from my slumber 8 years ago that I stopped eating aquatic animals. Now when I dive and snorkel, we are equals.

Fish have just as much of a right to be here as you and me; and they also have just as much of a right to live free and to live free from suffering as you and me. The root of injustice lies in discrimination, and discrimination against other species is no different. Speciesism has caused more pain and suffering and death, by leaps and bounds, than any other form of discrimination in history. It feels good to not cause unnecessary suffering. If you stop eating animals, I am quite certain you will agree.

If you like fish, if you like watching them in a ...

If you like fish, if you like watching them in a fishbowl or in an aquarium or when snorkeling or scuba diving; if you like how beautiful some of them are, how weird others are, how strange their behaviors can get; you’ll like this book. You’ll like the breadth of his research, the lightness of his humor, his deep appreciation for fish (or “fishes” as he calls them, to help us understand their plurality and variety). You’ll like how he makes you think about them in new ways: their emotions, their senses, their consciousness, their life in community.

I like reading about play and games and imagination and playfulness and all things related. And when I'm not reading about those things, I like reading science fiction. I especially like those "first contact" stories when the heroes are trying to figure out how to communicate with an alien mind. It's a wonderful exercise of the imagination, just to imagine someone who thinks differently than you. It's also a wonderful exercise in compassion, and understanding children and your significant others and your boss. Reading Dr. Balcombe's book is like that. Like reading science fiction. Only it's science non-fiction.

You’ll be amazed at how much mind is present in the two-thirds of the world we’ve never considered in any other light than that of food and perhaps beauty. I’d advise, however, that you skip the last chapter.

If, on the other hand, you like fish because they taste good, or because catching them is good sport, and you don’t want to think about the lives, the uniqueness of the beings that you are taking away from their communities and habitats, you should still read this book. It will give you a different perspective on things. It will help you appreciate the cost of the gift of their lives that you are accepting. But you still shouldn’t read the last chapter.
You might flip the book open to, for example, page 84 of the chapter that begins with the question "do fish feel pain?" where Dr. Balcombe writes:

"Fishes show the hallmarks of pain both physiologically and behaviorally. They possess the specialized nerve fibers that mammals and birds use to detect noxious stimuli. They can learn to avoid electric shocks and anglers' hooks. They are cognitively impaired when subjected to nasty insults to their bodies, and this impairment can be reversed if they are provided with pain relief."

Yes, but do they have fun?

And so, we turn to page 97.

"This one (fish) seemed to have a destination. She would swim in one direction along the bottom (of the aquarium), then, on reaching the end of the tank, she swerved upward and swam to the surface. Arriving there, she was met by the current of the water pump, pushing the little traveler like a rocket back to the other side. There, she descended back to the bottom and started her circuit all over."

Finally, yes, if you’re the kind of person who wants to save lives, conscious lives, who wants to help create a better balance between our ever-growing, all-consuming appetite and the dwindling abundance of ways to satisfy those appetites; if you want to get angry, yes, by all means, read the whole book, every last word.

Adaptation or not?

Having thought more about this novel - The Quest for Christa T. in English - I have revised my overall assessment more positively. Still, I am in two minds about it: taking this as a novel written in 1968 by a young author living in East Germany, in what was then The German Democratic Republic (GDR) or reading it independently from this particular context like a work of literature. In the second case, the novel's story would leave me modestly interested while I would find the author's writing style and language too intricate and cumbersome to enjoy. But, I can't really read this novel outside its historical context. And for that time and place, Christa Wolf's 'reflections' (a better terms than 'quest' I believe) on Christa T. was a politically brave and literary innovative novel to say the least. Deservedly, the book established the author's reputation both in East Germany and elsewhere.

What is it all about? In general terms, the novel is a coming of age story, painting a detailed portrait of a young woman, Christa T., as compiled from letters, diaries and other papers by a lifelong friend of the same age group. The group of friends at the centre of the book were born in the last years of the Nazi regime and grew up in the first decades of new East German State. Christa T. stood out among the group not only for her beauty and intelligence but, even more importantly, for her independent spirit. We know early on that she dies in her mid-thirties from leukemia, leaving husband and three children behind... and massive amounts of notes and other materials that her unnamed friend tries to bring together into a kind of cohesive story. The narrative, however, does not follow any chronological order, the voices switch from the narrator to Christa T. who herself is telling part of her story that is then re-told by the narrator. I have to admit that, reading it in German was at times a challenge, requiring patience and total concentration even by a parent-tongue German.

The most interesting aspect of the novel, given its time of writing, was for me the more philosophical and political undercurrent of Wolf's story. Through Christa T. herself and the narrator, Wolf touches on or even delves into pertinent questions of identity and individualism in the face of the required "Anpassung" (adaptation), imposed by the school and the political system in general of East Germany in the nineteen sixties. How can one maintain a sense of freedom while benefiting from the opportunities offered by the State for those who are actively participating in the society? In that sense, Wolf not only created a portrait of one individual but one of a whole generation. A generation that tried, while adapting as much as necessary, fought for its one space of independence and individuality.

A Quest for Identity

On the surface, this novel is quite simple. It is the story of the life of Christa T, an unassuming girl who grows up during the Nazi rule of Germany and goes to college in Socialist East Germany. The power of this book is in the heartbreaking and incredibly true-to-life revelations that the character reveals. Christa is not a "non-conformist" in the negative sense. She is simply an individual who wants to keep changing and forming her identity in a society where it is accepted that after a certain point you should stop growing as a person and wait to die.

In a sense, Christa is questing for the infinite, for release from the constraints of physical existence. She lives in the margins, and writes poetry to clear her mind. Christa wants to form herself without historical or existential pressures limiting her. In writing this novel, Christa Wolf is illuminating both a personal struggle for identity and the manner in which we judge those who are "different" or keep to themselves. Christa does not rebel against society in the traditional sense. She tries to have the best and most varied existence that she can, given the limitations of society.

This novel is well worth your time. It will break your heart and change the way you look at the world. An overlooked masterpiece.

A woman who does not fit in

Christa T. is the story of a woman growing up in post-war East-Germany - under Communist rule. She is not openly hostile to the regime, but she is a woman who does not fit in, a dreamer and a romantic. Her life is not outwardly dramatic: She reads literature at university, works as a teacher, marries a vet and lives far away from the big city, but this intensely private life was in itself an act of rebellion in a country which wanted fervent supporters of Communist doctrine, and which expected writers to celebrate tough workmen. Christa T. is also the story of a woman trying to find the words to write about another woman's life, and this is "The Quest for Christa T." - Christa Wolf ranks among the best authors now writing in German, and the quiet tragedy of Christa T. is one of her most moving books.

I have rarely enjoyed any book more than I enjoyed this

I have rarely enjoyed any book more than I enjoyed this. This is the story of a much-admired public couple who have shared a front row seat to history. Despite her Pulitzer Prize, and his 40 years as one of the most powerful law enforcement figures in the United States, we have known little, until now, about their extraordinary marriage. Despite his tough demeanor, Bob Morgenthau is a 95 year old hottie, with seven kids and a soft heart. Although this marriage seems unusually passionate given the state of marriage today, I buy it, and I suggest it to anyone who loves high end name-dropping, headline-making criminal trials, and the most unlikely marriage on the face of the earth. She was a journalist with radical politics in her twenties, and he was the District Attorney of Manhattan, a widower in his mid-Fifties, when they met. Best of all, it reads like a dream, because the author seems to care almost as much about writing as she does about her husband. Her lyrical writing style is a pleasure to read; I just loved this book. My husband, who loves crime and the gritty city, enjoys a good read, and he is loving it too.

Seriously Damaged by Too Much Information, But A Fascinating Memoir Nonetheless

This is a fascinating memoir, but one that is damaged - seriously damaged, IMHO, by the inclusion of too much (way too much) information. I give the book four stars, because it is fascinating and eminently readable, but it was a close call at times.

Robert Morgenthau is a fascinating man, both in terms of the history of his amazing family and his own inspiring achievements. And his May-October (November?) marriage to Lucinda Franks is part of his fascination. It's also nice to read about a more-or-less loving, functional family in an era when dysfunctional families seem to be the stuff of which so much reading is made.

However, Ms. Franks goes into details of their intimate life that are unnecessary - for example (SPOILER ALERT), do we really need to know that Mr. Morgenthau told her to strip so they could have sex on the deck of their boat? The only thing she spared us (thankfully!) were detailed anatomical descriptions of Mr. Morgenthau's private parts. I mean, it's OK to know that they had a passionate physical relationship, but do we really need to know these details?

She also seems to take credit for many of his achievements and more. I have no doubt that she contributed to some of his achievements, if only by encouraging him to tilt at some windmills and/or supporting him in his efforts to do so. However, in some cases you come away with the impression that if it weren't for her, he'd have been just a somewhat better-than-average DA. And I found her discussion of her "discovery" of the causes of 9/11 hubristic to the max; are we really supposed to think that she's the only one who really knows what happened?

Lastly, as some other reviewers have noted, her constant protestations about their modest lifestyle come across as disingenuous; they had to sell an apartment on Park Avenue to buy a smaller one on Central Park West? They had to cut back on the size of their farm along the Hudson, and their rented cottage on the Vineyard was "modest"?

All that said, it remains a fascinating memoir of a fascinating man and, yes, a fascinating couple that is well written and eminently readable, if just a bit over the top.

This is the kind of book that you read open-mouthed.

I am fortunate to have a husband who allowed me to do this: to talk about the personal life that he has kept so private during his forty-five years as a public figure; to divulge the unknown stories behind his major cases; to reveal the intimacies… His was an act of love, and it is in tribute to him that this book is written.” TIMELESS by Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Lucinda Franks is a remarkably open, intimate look at a long-range marriage of a couple who live in the rarified air of money and fame.

I’m glad Franks offers such a long prologue; it’s an explanation I would have been searching for if I had just started reading the book without seeing this first. After the recounting of her life as a ’60s revolutionary and Morgenthau’s staid, proper life as an upstanding attorney from an upstanding super wealthy family, the following information would have made me even more uncomfortable: “I cover your mouth, muffling your chatter, and plant little kisses down your belly.” I’m sorry, did someone sneak a copy of 50 SHADES OF GREY into my TIMELESS book jacket? Nope, it’s just Franks telling us how much she loves having sex with her husband. Not that there’s anything wrong with that, but…

My brother worked with Manhattan District Attorney Robert Morgenthau. It is difficult to put the visage of his lined, serious face topped with white hair together with his wife’s remembrances of his tender embraces and their lovemaking among the cliffs of Martha’s Vineyard beaches. It is hard to imagine any prominent legal mind allowing his or her journalist spouse to expose such personal details about their life together. But clearly Morgenthau loves his wife dearly, and thus Franks is able to tell us their love story with intimate details that seem as if they belong in another kind of book.

The many decades that separate the lives of Morgenthau and Franks make this a most extreme May-December relationship. TIMELESS is a peek inside a very privileged world --- two actually: the world of serious money and the world of great professional success. Both husband and wife were ensconced in professions that gave them enormous opportunities, which they took with gusto. Then there are the little things: the houses and apartments, the fancy vacations, the name dropping. This is a world in which most of us will never live. And Franks, using all her writerly powers, manages to put us right inside this wealthy world, where you sit next to playwright Lillian Hellman at picnics and have intense moments with Hillary and Bill Clinton on the night Princess Diana dies. Later, on the press plane with Hillary during her presidential campaign, Franks wonders if she remembers they shared that sad night.

Later on, as the relationship deepens, Franks finds her foothold in the world of step-parenthood, and then eventually the couple has their own kids. The world of their blended family takes a spot right along their upwardly mobile careers throughout the story and gives a more average human experience for us to relate to and engage in.

This kind of open door policy is granted usually when some member of the family dies and then the “real” story of their life comes out. Morgenthau is still alive, and Franks never says why now is the time to reveal all of these very personal details about their life. But that’s not all. Having written a book about her father’s experiences with PTSD, she helps to uncover her husband’s similar experiences, all of which are also related to us in this tome. So now we are privy to the bedroom, interior monologues, public fame, private joys and luxuries. The one thing you can say about TIMELESS is that it is fearless and doesn’t leave any aspect of their lives aside when tearing through their own snapshots and memories.

This is the kind of book that you read open-mouthed. It is an intriguing look at some very famous people, but has a strange resonance since Franks and Morgenthau are a high-achieving society couple with a rich intellectual life. You will not be able to put it down, waiting to see what next adventure the two get into together. TIMELESS is a fascinating book written in a narcissistic tone by a journalist whose real life beats any of the lives she ever reported on throughout her career.

This collection displays a mature writer at the height of his talents, following what Celan himself called the "turn" (Wende) of his work away from the lush, surreal metaphors of his earlier verse. Given "the sinister events in its memory," Celan believed that the language of poetry had to become "more sober, more factual . . . ‘grayer.'" Abandoning the more sumptuous music of the first books, he pared down his compositions to increase the accuracy of the language that now "does not transfigure or render ‘poetical'; it names, it posits, it tries to measure the area of the given and the possible." In his need for an inhabitable post-Holocaust world, Celan saw that "reality is not simply there; it must be searched for and won."

About the Author

Paul Celan was born in Czernowitz, Bukovina, in 1920, and is widely considered to be one of the most innovative poets of the twentieth century. A German-speaking Jew, he was sent to a forced labor camp during World War II. Celan settled in Paris in 1948, where he lived and wrote until his suicide in 1970.

Pierre Joris has written, edited, and translated more than fifty books, including poetry, essays, translations, and anthologies. Most recently he published Barzakh: Poems 2000-2012, Meditations on the Stations of Mansur al-Hallaj, and the fourth volume of the anthology Poems for the Millennium: The University of California Book of North African Literature. In 2005 he received the PEN Award for Poetry in Translation for his translation of Celan's Lichtzwang / Lightduress.

The Difficulty is the Reward

At this writing there are only 6 reviews of this amazing book, and 3 of them are complaints about the binding and the paper. Please don’t be deterred by qualms about the book’s presentation and durability. I’ve spent the last month immersed in these pages—book-marking, referencing, writing notes in the margins, lugging the 2.5 lb. marvel around with me, splaying it out on occasion—and it has held up just fine. While it’s not a deluxe edition, neither is it prohibitively expensive. The paper is of average thickness—not notably thin—and was probably chosen because, at 650 pages, heavier stock would have made the volume size unwieldy. This book is extraordinary—both Celan’s poetry and Joris’s illumination of it—and to disregard that while complaining about the paper is absurd.

Pierre Joris has spent the last 40 years in devoted “apprenticeship” to Celan’s work, and his lengthy introduction and 170 pages of commentary do
much to open these final cryptic books to broader understanding. Many people admire Celan in theory but find his later poetry too difficult—here Joris has provided great help, both on a scholarly level and with an impassioned and intuitive feeling for the work. He does a fine job of explication without dulling any of the masterful ambiguity that allows these poems to be experienced in different ways at different times. His painstaking translations honor the originals without deadening them. The poems are still “difficult” –in part because they are so emotionally charged and soul-wrenching—but they don’t refuse a thoughtful reader. References to concrete events, people, objects, and landscapes are generally there, locked into the complex of each word-puzzle, if there is an effort to find them. Joris has provided innumerable and invaluable keys.

Celan’s “difficulty” is not an intentional obscuration of fact or emotion, nor is it a game. One feels, at every step of the way, a sense of profound and often anguished struggle underlying whatever spare truth finally reached the page. He wrestled to express (and honor) his losses and horrors without giving way to false sentiment, numbness, dislocation, reactivity, glorification. The marvel of his work is that he accomplished just that, repeatedly, and with an alchemical infusion of elegance and power.

In his Bremen Prize speech, Celan said: “Only one thing remained reachable, close and secure amid all the losses: language. Yes, language. In spite of everything it remained secure against loss. But it had to go through its own lack of answers, through terrifying silences, though the thousand darknesses of murderous speech. It went though. It gave me no words for what was happening but went through it. Went through and would resurface, enriched by it all.”

The language that resurfaced bears witness to, and illuminates, the dark mysteries of Celan’s perilous journey. There is nothing else like it. This book is not for those who are seeking lyrical flights or rhymes. But the difficulties one might encounter in reading it might also turn out to be the rewards.

I'M REVIEWING THE BOOK ITSELF

I apologize in advance since this isn't a review of Celan. I couldn't review his work, I'm not smart enough. But I love it. I am writing to complain about the book itself. It has a cheap binding and the paper isn't rich like the kind New Directions uses when they publish poetry. What a disappointment. Indeed, why buy hardcovers if the publishers refuse to give readers a beautiful product. What with e-books you'd think they'd do what Hollywood did when television reared it's antennae, namely, create Cinemascope, 3D, in the case of books, cloth bindings and rich paper like they did up until the late sixties. I mean, simply charge an extra couple of bucks to cover costs. I have an edition of Ginsberg in hardcover, a recent collection, and already the pages are pulling away from the binding and the paper is dingy brown.

This current book does one thing right though. Like Celan's poetry it feels lighter than air.

The poetry stands on its own as a thing of brilliance. I am writing in regard to the shoddy quality of the book: cheap paper, generic font, and a poorly glued spine. Poetry collections by Hill, Neruda, Yeats, and many more, pulled from my shelf, for comparison show a much greater attention to detail. FSG showed little care in the execution of this volume. The book's construction is identical to any other over-sized, mass-produced hardback. Celan, and his admirers deserved better.

This is one of the best travel diary ever written--ranking up there with other master travel diaries, such as "The Narrow Road to the Deep North" by the 17th century Japanese poet Matsuo Basho. No other book has so deeply searched for the answers and meanings to the questions of Africa and its peoples. Everyone knows that Alberto Moravia was Italy's greatest writer in the 20th century, writing such novels like A Ghost At Noon, The Conformist, and The Fancy Dress Party. In this book Moravia has taken the resposibilty to make sense of the mess that is Africa, of its politics, its peoples' struggles, and most importantly, perhaps, of their obliviousness of it all, except of course, its effect.
