About the Author

Jack Viertel is the senior vice president of Jujamcyn Theaters, which owns and operates five Broadway theaters. He has been involved in dozens of productions presented by Jujamcyn since 1987, including multiple Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award winners, from City of Angels to Angels in America. He has also helped shepherd six of August Wilson’s plays to Broadway. He is the artistic director of New York City Center’s acclaimed Encores! series, which presents three musical productions every season. In that capacity he has overseen fifty shows, for some of which he adapted the scripts. He conceived the long-running Smokey Joe’s Cafe and the critically acclaimed After Midnight and has been a creative consultant on many shows, including Hairspray, A
Christmas Story, and Dear Evan Hansen. He was the Mark Taper Forum’s dramaturg and the drama critic
and arts editor of the Los Angeles Herald Examiner, and he has spent a decade teaching musical theater
at the Tisch School of the Arts at New York University.

Really good read and very informative

Excellent book, a really nice companion piece to Razzle Dazzle: The Battle for Broadway that I finished last week. Whereas the earlier book made me want to read more about theatre history. The Secret Life.. made me want to listen to and/or go see some shows that I have missed. There were a few places where I felt that the conceit fell apart a little bit (the book is structured like the musical structure it is teaching), but overall it works. This is a textbook, and at times it reads like one, but overall a fun read and very informative. I really loved the recommend cast albums section at the end.

The hidden structure of a Broadway Musical

Inside almost every musical in the "Golden Age" (from about Oklahoma to A Chorus Line), there is a covert structure where each number plays a role, eg The Opening Number, The I Want Song, and the 11:00 o' clock number.

The author of this book clearly knows his way around the dramaturgy of the musical. He shares his knowledge with us in the most delightful way. It was great to revisit so many shows and learn of this covert structure structure in which the numbers live.

This is one of those great books that provide both enjoyment and learning. Enjoy! And learn!

An Up-to-Date Course in Musical Theatre

An informative analysis based on Mr. Viertel's years of experience in the Broadway theatre and teaching a class on the subject. Much of it has been noted before over the past 70 years, from the use of the "I Want" Song to the Secondary Love Plot and Reprises, etc., but Viertel brings his remarks up to date by noting the changes being made to these conventions by works such as SPRING AWAKENING and, yes, HAMILTON. For anyone interested in musical theatre--including directors and writers new to the genre--this book brings it all together.

This fascinating novel, by the author of such critically acclaimed works as Tender Mercies ( LJ 11/15/78. o.p.) and Civil Wars ( LJ 4/15/84), concerns a family's struggle to hold itself together after a teenaged son murders his girlfriend. The story is told alternately from the viewpoint of the boy's mother, father, and sister. The story moves from initial shock and denial (our son could never have done this!) through anxiety over his disappearance and the difficulties of his capture and incarceration to the murder trial itself and finally to life "afterwards," when the family has had to relocate to another part of the country to avoid cruel gossip in the small New Hampshire town where these events took place. The family members are not only at odds with the community but frequently at odds with one another as well. Deep questions of loyalty, honesty, and love are forced to the surface in this psychologically riveting tale.

Brown, as she showed in Civil Wars (1985), is particularly drawn to what happens to families when a wheel comes off, when the domestic unit begins to careen and veer and ultimately crash. Here, this is her theme again, and once more she accomplishes its dreadful focus with remarkable emotional nuance and high-quality flexible prose. The Reisers, Ben and Carolyn, have two children, Jacob and Judith. Carolyn is a pediatrician, Ben a sculptor, the kids normal enough for their teen and preteen ages. They are Jews among gentile New Hampshire-ites, but are accepted and like where they live, chose it. And then the son's girlfriend is killed. And it is the son who has killed her, in a rage, then has disappeared. It is as terrible a thing for the parents as actually having Jacob be the one killed. How to know one's kid? Ben's reaction is to hide evidence, then (when Jacob is found) to hide the boy, the truth, anything: he even refuses to testify to the grand jury and eventually goes to jail for it. Carolyn--along with daughter Judith--is ripped open not only by the shame and horror but by the lying; and ultimately she finds herself in a cruel grip of conscience she can't deny--even when it means she must deny her son. The plight here--``the forfeit of ordinary life''--is so raw and impossible to finesse that half the time you're almost wincing with the pain that Brown so delicately and dramatically gives shades to. The book is occasionally boggy, stuck in the starkness of its unadorned architecture, with no way to move ahead, to put its agony to momentary rest. And Ben's and Carolyn's and Judith's eloquence of thought sometimes seems too good to be true. Yet true it ultimately all feels--and this is thanks to the tactile, nervy writing Brown accomplishes throughout. The Spring of 1965

Whew, things were different 42 years ago. Chad & Jeremy had been pop stars for two years, by the time of the release of this record. "Before & After" was their first on Columbia Records, in May 1965. The duo did have plenty of chart hits on their previous record label. But, they had little money to show for theis success, so: "Before & After" starts up the 'American' chapter of the Chad & Jeremy story.

Recorded in New York City in early 65 this CD contains some of Chad & Jeremy's best early numbers. The production & performance are on this are first rate for a recording from over four decades ago. This CD has the original record of 11 cuts AND 11 bonus tracks. This clocks in at 57 minutes. There are many outstanding cuts featured here such as the title track: "Before & After", "Why Should I Care"," I'm In Love Again" & "What Do You Want With Me" standout as excellant songs. Covers of Gordon Lightfoot: "For Lovin' Me" and Doc Pomus: "Can't Get Used To Losing You" fit in with the record's theme of winning & losing love. All the Chad & Jeremy elements are in place on: "Before & After." Sparkling acoustic guitars, light orchestration and those trademark 5-star harmonies. There are some rockers mixed in as well, with this great folk-rock.

Of the 11 bonus tracks, three are previously un-released: "Don't Get Around Much Anymore" features a jazzy sound with fast piano runs. "Sometimes" is an Rod Argent rocker and "Fare Thee Well" is an really pretty folk ditty. There are both sides of an Italian Single on here as well as the "Other" duo of Chad & Jill Stuart doing "The Cruel War" & "I Can't Talk To You" and they are noteworthy.

This is a very nice package, with 4 pages of Notes from Chad & Jeremy, AND the bonus tracks that INCREASE it's value.

I found the book too wordy, especially first three ...

I found the book too wordy, especially first three fourth's of the book, last part to end more interesting. Much of the book information leading up to trial could have been told in fewer words. I skipped much of it until Jacob was arrested. I couldn't understand the way father wanted to lie to save son from punishment. No one seemed to ever confront boy about what he had done and how wrong it was. I wasn't surprised that he got off without punishment nor that family moved. At end of book, I felt he was still a timebomb waiting to go off and thought family, each one, was more miserable than when they lived in NH. A downer from beginning to end!

Stuffy Reviewers - Good book

Unfortunately, many reviewers don't seem to realise that the review is for how good the book is, not whether or not you like the family that in this case are the main characters. Just because a book challenges what you think of life or moves you (even negatively) does not mean it is a bad book. In fact that is quite often criteria for a good book. Some people seem to be too stuck in their ways to appreciate this great novel.

Grade 2-5-- When the colorful, noisy, multihued Araboolies move to conventional, quiet Liberty Street, General Pinch and his wife are horrified. And when the Araboolies paint their house in bright zigzags, camp on the front lawn, and engage the neighborhood children in wild and joyful games, General Pinch calls out the army. Quickly the children decorate every house with paints, banners and balloons, leaving the General's house as the "weird one" on the block. Following orders to find the house that is different, the soldiers tie up the Pinch's house and drag it away. Brightly colored, sweeping, full double-page paintings enliven this modern fable of people vs. government. Swope's message may well be that diversity and individuality are good, but what comes through in the story is the sense that modern neighborhoods, no matter how ordinary, exist under the threat of military enforcement. The fact that the children of the neighborhood are able to cover up the radical individualism of the dissident family and turn the tables on the General himself gives no comfort. The pictures are full of action and entertainment, and the book can prove useful--not for the lighthearted story that was probably intended, but for consideration of the seldom-discussed role of the military in modern societies. This is one of my favorite books of all time. It is a fun way to undetstand in such a simple way about racism and bullying. It makes a perfect gift for young families. But I keep a copy for myself to read from time to time.

Hooray! This book is back in print!!!
Such a delightful book! I first learned of this book when our minister read the book to the children one Sunday. When I learned that the book was out of print, I began to search for used copies, but had no luck. Then one day I discovered that the book was being re-printed and I signed up immediately to have it delivered to me.
The story of the Araboolies changing colors each day and sleeping on the front lawn always brings a smile to me and to my children. This book teaches tolerance in a way that is easy to understand. I plan on giving a copy of this book to all of my closest friends with children.

Start off the year right!

What a great book to start off the school year! I'd even recommend it for up through eighth grade.
Liberty Street is a quiet street where the residents live in fear of upsetting the General. Everything is the same, same, same. Each house is the same, everyone follows similar schedules... ho-hum boredom!
Until... the Araboolies move in. See what they do to change an everyday ho-hum street into a street that is worth living on.

About the Author
Miroslav Penkov was born in 1982 in Bulgaria. He moved to America in 2001 and received an MFA in creative writing at the University of Arkansas. His stories have won the BBC International Short Story Award 2012 and The Southern Review's Eudora Welty Prize and have appeared in A Public Space, Granta, One Story, The Best American Short Stories 2008, The PEN / O. Henry Prize Stories 2012, and The Best American Nonrequired Reading 2013. Published in over a dozen countries, East of the West was a finalist for the 2012 William Saroyan International Prize for Writing and the Steven Turner Award for First Fiction by the Texas Institute of Letters. In 2014-15 he was the literature protégé in the Rolex Mentor and Protégé Arts Initiative, working with mentor Michael Ondaatje. Penkov teaches creative writing at the University of North Texas, where he is editor-in-chief of the American Literary Review.

Atmospheric

I didn’t look up the Strandja (or Strandzha) part of Bulgaria – it extends into Turkey too – until after I finished reading this book. I wish I had: Wikipedia has a useful map and three pictures that are helpful in setting the scene. To Miroslav Penkov’s credit, though, I found I had already gained a fair idea of the essentials from his book; that the borders with both Turkey and Greece are close by, and that the Black Sea too is likely to be familiar to any native who ever strays even a short distance from their mountain village.

Quite apart from the increasingly cosmopolitan life led by us all these past 25 years (the lapse of time since communism yielded to parliamentary democracy in Bulgaria), even the oldest and most long-established villagers in the Bulgarian Strandja are likely, at some time in their lives, to have seen other parts of their country – for communist governments everywhere were much given to moving people around, or inspiring them to flee.

The basic story-line of Stork Mountain is of the extended visit of a twenty-something Bulgarian-American student to the Strandja mountain village from which his father migrated – precisely because of the communists. The young man’s grandfather is still alive. In his time, grandfather was the village schoolmaster; it was he who built the village school, having taught his first lessons in the open air, in the shade of a cherry tree. He was not a native; together with an Orthodox Christian priest, he had been sent there (and there was an element of flight in this too) by the communists, to counter the Muslim traditions of the mountain people.

If I had to sum up the novel in one word, that word would be ‘atmospheric’. I love the mountains; I’m fascinated by storks; I’m always interested in ‘the way things were’, in any part of the world. The interaction between Christian, Muslim and communist lifestyles is definitely of interest; as are rituals such as whirling barefoot in the raked ashes of a fire, or climbing up to ‘bury’ a skull in a stork’s nest.

The writing is good too, though liable to remind you from time to time that Miroslav Penkov teaches creative writing. Here’s a well-polished paragraph:-
‘For fifteen days and fifteen nights the people of Klisura built, assisted by people from the villages nearby – Bulgarians and Greeks alike. For fifteen days they tasted of this freedom. In vain, Captain Kosta’s rebels looked for help across the hills to the north. In vain, they waited for reinforcement from other Thracian regions. “Let them build,” the captain would say to his men. “More sweat on their brows, less time to think, less time to fear.”’

Here’s a simile that in my opinion doesn’t work:-
‘the broken panes of empty houses knocking like lids of coffins opening and closing shut.’

But it is forgiven as swiftly as this one follows:-
‘Then I climbed out my window, thumped into the cassis bush underneath it like a sack of crab apples, and limped across the yard, down the road, and to our neighbors.’

This is a literary novel, of interest both for its setting and its writing. If those things appeal to you, you are likely to be glad you took it up.

Where three countries meet

The Strandja Mountains which lie on the borderlands of Bulgaria and Turkey are the setting for this remarkable and very enjoyable novel.
An anonymous young American graduate student travels to the obscure village where his Bulgarian grandfather has moved without reference to the rest of the family some years previously. This apparently decent young man quickly finds himself embroiled in mystery and intrigue when he meets among others his Grandpa, the local imam, his rebellious daughter and discovers that in the past, the village was a centre for fire walkers of mixed Bulgarian and Greek origin. Why does the Christian half of the village lie empty while the Muslim is full? What events in the past led to the end of the fire dance and the exodus of the Christians? How was Grandpa involved? Why has he bought up all the derelict houses in the village? Why does the imam want him to sell? Why do the young Muslim girls exhibit a mania for the defunct fire dance?
This is a very clever novel which kept me reading through revelation after shocking revelation. Nothing here is quite what it appears. Expect ulterior motives, secrets, lies, crimes and acts of violence. The reader will learn much of the history of this much abused and exploited region and of differences which are historical, ethnic, religious and above all, familial. There are cunning parallels from Grandpa’s past to the young American’s present. What do we learn from the past? – perhaps, not very much.
Miroslav Penkov is a terrific story teller, above all, and I recommend this novel to anyone who loves to immerse themselves in another world.

A story well composed and told

While Mirsloav Penkov got internationally fame with his short-story titles, Stork Mountain is his first novel. The story about a young American student returning to Bulgaria, like a stork flies back to the nest he was born at, is part memoir, part a historical novel about Bulgaria, and a coming of age at the same time. Klisura, a remote village on the border with Turkey has been the scene for Thracians, Greeks, and Turks to conquer the country and impose their culture. Next to that Islam and Christianity also put their mark on the region, the voluntary and compulsive conversions, buildings, ownership of land and education.

The story's pace is alternating throughout the book. From lengthy expositions of the storks' migration paths to short summarized eras, like "And then, devoid of people, the Christian hamlet was transformed into a border zone. Such was the end. (..) The years passed, Grandpa raised my father an honest, smart, hardworking man. My father met my mother, married her, and I was born. Then Communism fell and Father said, We have no future here." The book is full of repetitive small stories and phrases, hooks for the major story line.

Set in the Strandja Mountains where black storks in nest in giant oaks and their lives move with the seasons. Pagan rituals like fire walking, worship of idols and Christian icons are mixed with the rages of the local imam and his daughter. Will the young American be free to fall in love with a Muslim girl? Will his grandfather reveal all answers he's looking for? Although it took me a while to get into the story, it then got my full attention until the very last page. A story well composed and told.

Helleborus orientalis, for example, is an entirely amiable plant, while the wisteria flower most freely under abuse... violent root pruning and frequent hacking back of top growth to encourage abundant flower. Any gardener may find its specific (and sometime technical) advice helpful, but walkers among gardens and those who dream of gardening will find special pleasure in plant lore and history and in the lucid descriptions that render them visible. Eck and Winterrowd describe their book as a mixed bag, a gypsy trunk of this and that, but treasure chest is more accurate; the essays are gems, not baubles. (Feb.)

I am a gardening enthusiast and I loved this book

This is a love story. I enjoyed reading about the lives of these two Vermonters and their love of gardening, cooking,entertaining friends, and each other. I had the pleasure of touring the gardens in the home they shared. As I walked about I could envision their joint endeavors to personalize the work they put into making their lives just as they wanted it. However, I am a gardener, and so this was especially gratifying to me. Others who don't have that interest may not share my enthusiasm. Recipes are included. I've read a few of Joe Eck's books. His partner has since passed away. This is a nice gift for a person with an interest in gardening.

The writing is gorgeous, the story compelling and the gardening information topnotch. It is a book I will refer to over and over again, re-reading it for the beauty of its language and to guide my gardening efforts. Anyone who loves gardens and good writing should own a copy.

MUCH MORE THAN JUST A NURSE

Not for the fainthearted, the 647 pages of Florence Nightengale by Mark Bostridge is a detailed account of the life and times of the heroine.
Florence herself can take the credit, or blame, for the size of the book because she left behind more than 200 volumes of her writings, including drafts, letters, reports and even scraps of papers. More is known about Florence than any other woman from the Victorian era.

Read this book and be inspired. Nurses are special people.

The era in the 1800's is landscaped by Bosteridge, drawing on the influences of religion, family life, culture and economic influences, many of which are mirrored in the financial meltdown of 2008. They had bank failures back in the 1800's; crop failures, and the poor struggling to exist. It is in this backdrop that Florence first moved to help those in need.

Florence is best known by the public for her Lady of the Lamp reputation earned in the Crimean War and while this defines her, that war experience was for a brief period of her 90 years life, 1854 to 1856. One third of the book deals with the Crimean action, the rest deals with an outstanding woman in troublemsome times. Florence was intelligent, well travelled, musically talented, forceful, determined and caring.

Bosteridge draws out her character and leaves us in no doubt we are dealing with an exceptional lady with the stamp of leadership.

On the subject of Florence's sexuality, the author is a little disappointing. Towards the end of his book he notes the several works about Florence, with the more modern views suggesting that she was lesbian. Her celibacy obviously drew attention and caused writers to wonder or assert.
While Bostridge mentions that these assertions are unfounded, we need to look to Gillian Gill's "Nightingales Florence and Her Family" for a more determined rejection of the lesbian suggestions.

Gill points out that the commencement of sexual innuendo commenced in 1940 when a prominent biographer insinuated that Florence had lesbian proclivities. Others, including American academics, and some film makers, marched to the sound of that drum. Gill maintains that there is just no evidence that Florence engaged in sexual activity with women (or men!) and the huge weight of documentation about her life defends that view.
Gill puts the record straight.

Florence lived to 90 years of age, a spinster. She was an attractive young lady and sought after, turning down offers of marriage. In her early days she wanted freedom. Her attitudes are recorded. Marriage interfered with her view of freedom so she avoided it. After Crimea she sought privacy and seclusion, beset by long standing ill health.

In 2010 there will be world wide acknowlegements of the centenary of her death. There will be some who will point out that nursing, and the views of Florence, have changed in 100 years but there will be no escaping that our world is a better place for her life. In any event there are signs that modern nursing preparation and training are unlikely to stand the 100 year test.
She struggled when women were powerless. Nursing was mostly an ugly profession outside the Religious Orders, and certainly in England nurses were primarily engaged in washing, cooking and bed making. Bosteridge shows nurses to have been drunks on duty, with night nurses prone to drinking and spending time in bed with their patients. No wonder the well-off Nightingale family tried to discourage Florence reaching out to those in need, even in the local community.

And the soldiers looked after by Florence and her 38 nurses in Crimea were low in the Army food chain. Their plight was revealed by newspaper correspondents and caring people, including Florence. The army left them to die of disease and was in denial until they were subjected to the wrath of the British public showing interest in the welfare of 30,000 of their men.

The Florence Nightingale book by Bosteridge belongs in your libary. You will wish to return to it to review the facts and engage again in the life of Florence for inspiration.

Great biography of the most influential person in the history of healthcare

This biography is a great complement to those that have come before (among the best of which are those of Gil and Dossey) and highlights the many ways in which Florence Nightingale laid the foundations for the healthcare mission as we know it today. His book was instrumental in the research I did for my own book "The Florence Prescription: From Accountability to Ownership." Here are just a few highlights from the career of this extraordinary woman:

- With her classic book "Notes on Nursing," Nightingale presaged the home healthcare movement that must be an essential element of real healthcare reform in the years to come. It also influenced several generations of women to become nurses.

- She was the first and most influential advocate for the healthcare rights of soldiers and veterans - someone to whom a great debt is owed by every veteran on every continent.

- She was the first hospital epidemiologist, and for her work was the first woman ever made a Fellow of the Royal Statistical Society.

- She was the first to implement the principle - taken for granted today - that medical triage would be based on the clinical needs of the patient, and not his rank in the military, social standing, or religion.

- Her work at the Scutari Barrack Hospital presaged virtually every major support department of the modern hospital: the first hospital medical records function, the first hospital-based pharmacy service, the first hospital nutrition service, the first hospital linen and housekeeping services, and she was even the first to number the beds in a ward.

- Although at the time of her work at Scutari germ theory was still novel and not widely accepted, her insistence on absolute cleanliness was the first real hospital infection control program, and her subsequent work gave a major boost to the sanitation movement (she would be absolutely horrified at the resistance hospitals still face to get clinicians to wash their hands between patients).

- She was in a very real sense the first hospital architect. The Herbert Hospital and the St. Thomas Hospital in London were the first hospitals built specifically for that purpose, as opposed to converting another building, and both were built upon principles developed by Nightingale. The modular design she developed for sanitation and ventilation purposes would guide hospital construction for the next century.

- She was the first person ever to calculate, and then work to reduce, cost per patient day, setting a precedent that has been followed by every hospital CFO ever since.

- And, of course, more than any other person she defined what it means to be a nurse and established nursing as a legitimate profession, and was the guiding light to the first professional school of nursing, graduates of which became the next generation of leaders in the field.

- In her spare time, she wrote a multi-volume book on religion that was highly praised by no less than John Stuart Mill, though was never published, and her collection of letters is the largest in the British collection (Winston Churchill's collection holds second place).

- With all her accomplishments, Nightingale never sought the public spotlight and assertively avoided the adulation that the British public wanted to shower upon her in the aftermath of her accomplishments at Scutari. But she was always beloved by the men she considered "her children," the soldiers of the British army,

A conniving psychologist pits two gifted, home-schooled siblings against one another, the narcissist Ivan and younger, more vulnerable Hilly (likened to Persephone). In alternating chapters, carefully paced to escalate the tension, each one tells about the assaults on their formerly close relationship. Hilly grows and finds her inner strength while Ivan simply refuses to change until his self-image cracks. Well executed in its setup, in its foreboding aura, and in the feel of each person's voice, the end result is unfortunate; the underlying character motivations are unconvincing. With the exception of Ivan's urgently earnest psychobabble (sickness can…be utilized as a mode of defense, a deep moat of illness around the castle of personality), neither one of the siblings appears to be either extraordinary or worth the machinations of the villain, whose evil actions are themselves unbaked. For any other author, it would be the best book of their career. For Koja, it's just another day.

Kathe Koja, Going Under (Frances Foster Books, 2006)

Kathe Koja excels at whatever she chooses to write. First it was horror (The Cipher, Skin), then human drama (Strange Angels, Kink). Then, a few years back, she turned her attention to the young adult novel, and immediately popped up with one of the best in the genre in a very long time, Straydog. She's stayed with the YA books since, and while they've all been very, very good, Going Under doesn't quite have the stay-up-all-night zing of Skin or Straydog. That doesn't make it any less good on a general level, it just means that when you compare it to other Kathe Koja novels, it's kind of midpack.

The story is told from two different perspectives, that of Hillary, who is dealing with the suicide of a friend, and her brother Ivan, who's watching his sister implode. Hillary is not a fan of therapy. When she refuses to go back to her first therapist, Ivan finds another thanks to a chance encounter, and both Ivan and Hillary are drawn into the new therapist's world-- but is he who he claims to be?

Koja flirts now and again with the existential horror of her first few novels in the YA world she's come to inhabit, most effectively in The Blue Mirror, and she does it here again. I'm not talking about "horror" in the monsters-and-supernatural-stuff sense here, but in the depravity inherent in the human soul. It's something she does very well, but she usually has a more compelling story in which to do it. It's still a fine novel, but it's not really up to the standard Koja has been setting for herself for the past decade and a half. *** ½

GOING UNDER by Kathe Koja explores the psychological angles of a faltering brother/sister relationship. Hilly and Ivan have always been close. Raised by what Hilly calls "semi-useless" parents, both brother and sister would probably argue they raised themselves.

Hilly is sent to a therapist to help her work her way through the emotional aftermath of a friend's suicide. The first therapist is unsuccessful in reaching Hilly, so her older brother helps to find a new doctor. But does the new doctor have Hilly's best interests in mind--or his own?

Kathe Koja uses the myths of Peresephone and Narcissus to illustrate the siblings relationship. Hilly's brother Ivan tells his parents and his sister he is attempting to save Hilly from being dragged into the darkness. At the same time Ivan's own warped self-image causes him to become entangled with the therapist's scheme to use Hilly's journal writings as material for his own book.

Readers with a knowledge of the ancient myths will be treated to an interesting twist on the meanings of the old tales. Koja's book would work well and provide fuel for discussion in a high school lit class focusing on different interpretations of these classical stories.

Highly recommend.

Going Under is narrated interchangeably by both our main characters, Hilly and Ivan. Hillys point of review is written as it would be in a journal- while Ivans is in present tense. Both narrators have interesting portions of the book and fill in each others blanks as well as offering their own perspectives on the same event/situation; neither one makes you want to skip ahead.

The book itself is based of the Greek myths of Persephone (Hilly) and Narcissus (Ivan). Both of the characters are aware of their 'alter' identities and learn from them in the story.

Kathe Koja creates a wonderful story full of realism and an overall mystifying feeling.

The book itself is wonderful and a very inspiring coming of age story.
