Eighteenth-century collections will be enriched by this edition (not reissued since the 19th century, and never published in America), which includes Smollett's life of Cervantes, his note on the translation, and his annotations to the novel. The foreword and introduction by Fuentes, however, are disappointing; concentrating on Cervantes and his times they tell us almost nothing about the raison d'etre for this edition, Smollett's translation. Smollett's pungent, jocular prose is ideally suited for his task; his translation makes a delightful alternative to the various attempts to render Don Quixote into modern English. Well translated, Well produced; I Recommend this Edition

It's been a long time since I've read Don Quixote, and that last time it was in a scholarly sense (meaning, I was forced to read it). I enjoyed it, and thought about reading it again, so I picked up the tattered, coverless, mass-market paperback that was pressed so tightly against the inside veneer of the bookshelf that it was literally stuck there. My first impression brought back a memory (and what might actually be some sort of phobia) -- footnotes! There were literally so many footnotes, attempting to explain the translation in order to make it more readable, that it distracted /irritated /frightened me, and I crammed the book right back where I found it.

I went on a quest for a footnote-free edition, and on the suggestion of a friend picked up the "new Grossman translation". I picked it up and flipped through the pages (the softcover edition)... there were some footnotes in there, but not too many, and they seemed to, for the most part, to explain spanish terms or old currencies and the like. No case of footnotes outweighing text on any given page... so that was a good start and an immediate salve for my (admittedly bizarre) footnote phobia.

That's how I came to own this version of Don Quixote. Now that I have it, I can say:

I don't miss the footnotes (not that I of all people would), because the text is extremely readable without explanation. The story seems jauntier and more funny than I remember... although I am no scholar, and can not read the original due to my own linguistic failures, I can only assume that this more joyful gait is owed to the translation. Go Grossman!

Another important point: the production quality of the paperback edition is phenomenal -- what other publishers should strive for. The paper is heavy and opaque yet it holds well, the pages (and the cover) feeling very fluid in the hand. It sounds silly, but with a ~1000 page novel, it makes a big difference. I was able to hold the book in one hand and read comfortably. Also, the generous wings on both covers came in handy when a bookmark or paper scrap could not be found to mark my place. Go Harper Perrenial!

I wont critique the actual story here, as that has been done to death. I will keep my critique to this wonderful, straightforward, footnote-lite, feel-good edition. And this is it: I highly recommend it, a beautiful and proudly-built edition that is certainly as worthy of literary study as it is an enjoyable and entertaining way to relax. Now go and tilt at a windmill, or something.

I loved this book when I read it a few years ...

I loved this book when I read it a few years ago in my World Literature class. I loved it so much that at the time it had become my all time favorite novel. I read it off and on through the years, and I have always loved it, but now something has changed. The characters and the overall story is still highly enjoyable, but I will admit, the side stories are kind of boring and slow down the enjoyment of the novel, like little entertainment speed bumps. Quixote and Sancho are still hilariously stupid, and insane, but every time I have to hear the tragedy of some scorned lover, or love triangle, I now find myself yawning. I guess outside the confines of a classroom with in depth analysis of the novel, these little segments are a drag. I review based off of entertainment, and I still say this novel is a solid 4 out of 5 stars for entertainment, for it is practically slapstick comedy filled with violence, vomit, and poo, but it is classic so it is taught in classrooms, awesome!

My new favorite classic

Don Quixote has the humor of Nacho Libre and a weird blend of fantasy and reality that I can only compare to Galaxy Quest. I. Loved. This. Book. I was surprised how funny it was. Like laugh-out-loud funny with crude potty humor (my favorite) and violence that the Three Stooges would love. For example, Don Quixote does something absolutely crazy until I can’t stand him but then he gets the crap beaten out of him so I felt sorry for him and kind of liked him again until, of course, he does something crazy again. It actually takes a while to get tired of that cycle because it manages to be funny every time. By the time I was tired of it, Don Quixote started to change and develop more. The story is tragic, too, so it has some depth (but even the tragedy manages to be kind of funny).

If you read this novel in high school and feel like you didn’t read the same book as me, YOU DIDN’T. You need to read the Edith Grossman translation. It’s amazing. It flows well. It’s modern enough to understand yet she worked hard to keep as much of the context of the time period and language as possible. The style feels similar to reading Jane Austen. It’s not totally modern but not old enough that it’s hard to understand. Edith’s footnotes in this novel were great. They gave context when needed. They pointed out plot holes that I didn’t even notice like someone in the room talking even though the author never mentioned them coming in. She also did her best to explain the word play humor that sadly didn’t translate to English. If you’re still not convinced to read it because it’s long, I can tell you that the reason it’s so long is because there are chivalric novellas inserted into the narrative. They’re good stories but if you are intimidated by how long it is, you could skip these novellas.

Robb, a former Boston Globe staffer, presents a celebratory history of the pioneering women psychologists who in the '70s began to challenge traditional concepts of the self and of women's psychological "deficiencies," and advanced their own women-centered theories. Robb opens by describing how Harvard psychologist Carol Gilligan came to write her groundbreaking In a Different Voice, which argued that for women the idea of the self is intimately bound up in a network of close relationships. Robb goes on to describe how other women psychologists and psychiatrists—including Jean Baker Miller, Mary Belenky, Lisa Hirschman, Judith Lewis Herman and Janet L. Surrey—arrived at similar findings. Disseminating their ideas via consciousness-raising groups in the Boston area, these women regarded gender differences as "systemic rather than essential." Exceptionally Good!

The philosopher Ken Wilber first alerted to the work of Carol Gilligan. I was already aware of some of the work of Jean Baker Miller and Judith Lewis Herman and the revolution in psychology that they had spawned. But some of the details I did not known and they are captured in the remarkable narrative of Christina Robb's book.

Almost thirty years ago, Carol Gilligan wrote an essay entitled "In a Different Voice," that was subsequently expanded into a book that I recommend highly. She described the marked discrepancies in morality and self-expression between men and women. For women, the whole notion of self tends to be inextricably bound up in a web of close relationships. Women tend to be more diligent about maintaining and nurturing these relationships, and inter-personal details tend to be more important to them, than they are for most men. At the time that she started writing about this, much psychological thinking in the United States had not yet dragged itself out of the confines of the post-Freudian theorizing that had dominated American psychology for decades. Gilligan and her co-workers identified relationships as the foundation of our psychological and physical states. At the time, the idea that men and women might tend to think and relate in different ways was anathema. I did a brief stint in Boston around that time, and it was pretty clear what could and could not be thought about. Despite the incredible liberal and intellectual traditions at Harvard, there were clearly some "no go" areas in psychology; gender differences being just one of them. Gilligan's work was courageous, and taken together with the findings of psychiatrists Judith Lewis Herman and Jean Baker Miller, would ultimately lead to radical alterations in the way that we understand the psychology of women. Are these gender differences social, political or biological? The answer is, I think, yes: all of the above.

Christine Robb has managed to capture the quiet revolution that these scientists introduced, and which is still being felt today. Though it is surprising how often discussion of gender differences are still omitted from much work on self-psychology. In an otherwise wonderful book - The Self in Neuroscience and Psychiatry, edited by Tilo Kircher and Anthony David - there is scarcely any mention of gender.

I would not normally expect to get through a 450-page book at one sitting: I'm not a speed-reader! But this is so well written and the biographies and interviews so enthralling, that I did indeed polish it off at one sitting. Though I feel sure that I shall return to it in the future.

Though this is a big juicy book with pages of references and a bibliography, I'm going to make a prediction that it is going to be one of those rare cross-over books that will be read not just by academics and psychology students, but also by people who really are interested in knowing more about themselves and understanding relationships. It wouldn't surprise me at all if this one gets featured on Oprah! It's that good.

This is one of the best books that I have read in a long time. Part intellectual history, this book traces the work of Jean Baker Miller, Carol Gilligan and others who revolutionized how we think about development, relationship, and psychology. The storytelling is wonderful and engaging as we are taken back to those revolutionary days in the Boston area when these women took on the power structures of their universities and the psychology profession. We hear how these women stood strong and supported each other. Along the way, we gain greater insight into women's voice and growth-in-relationship and thus learn more about these essential theories. This book was engaging and inspiring!

Christina Robb has achieved an easily assimilable description of the relational approach taken by the many women practitioners of academic psychology and psychtherapy who refused to accept the standard male-led, soulless,rigid technologies and thinking of the late 1970s and early 80s. That changes were needed to paychology's paradigms was first proposed by Carol Gilligan a student of the renowned moral rsearcher Lawrence Kohlberg. She and subsequent small informal groups of women extended the world's knowledge and understanding of difference and undercut the assumption that women's moral reasoning was inferior to that of men. It wasn't , it was different - not worse, just different. Thanks Christina Robb for explaining the history and development of revolutionary psychological thinking. Which raises the question. What action resulted?

No one expected Swift to mount much of a defense. Not only were the rules of the tribunals, America’s first in more than fifty years, stacked against him, his superiors at the Pentagon were pressuring him to persuade Hamdan to plead guilty. But Swift didn’t believe that the tribunals were either legal or fair, so he enlisted a young Georgetown law professor named Neal Katyal to help him sue the Bush administration over their legality. In the spring of 2006, Katyal, who had almost no trial experience, took the case to the Supreme Court and won. The landmark ruling has been called the Court’s most important decision ever on presidential power and the rule of law.

Written with the cooperation of Swift and Katyal, The Challenge follows the braided stories of Swift’s intense, precarious relationship with Hamdan and the unprecedented legal case itself. Hamdan vs. Rumsfeld

Here is an astonishing story in which two unlikely and oddly paired attorneys (read heroes) take on the United States government on behalf of a Yemeni citizen detained at Guantanamo. Neither Lt. Cmdr. Charles Swift, the navy lawyer assigned to the case, nor Neal Katyal, the Georgetown law professor who volunteered to help, could have imagined where the case would take them nor what it would require of their careers, family, and personal well being. But the story of what they did, how they did it, what it took, who helped, and how it all came out is as amazing as it is important, resulting in one of the most significant legal decisions of the post 9/11 era, the Supreme Court's ruling on Hamdan Against Rumsfeld. Jonathan Mahler relates the tangled and extraordinarily complex sequence of events and legal maneuvers with such mastery of the material, you have to believe he had a degree in law was on hand for every conversation, discussion, and encounter. The Challenge is a gratifying David and Goliath story, but its real worth lies in the issues of justice and constitutionality which this case brings to the fore and which determine whether anyone will receive the justice presumably guaranteed by our constitution and international law.

Mr. Mahler has researched a griping courtroom drama in the tradition of "A Few Good Men" where the murder charges have been replaced by a constitutional crisis. Does terrorists have any rights under the Constitution or can they be have forever without a trial? The book could have used some tighter editing, but otherwise is quite readable and clear as to the legal issues and maneuverings. Following the case as it slowly makes it way to the Supreme Court, the author illustrates the lives of the lawyers involved and the costs that they paid to win a victory before the Roberts court to have a trial. As A coda, the newspapers reported this week that the defendent was acquitted of the serious charges and will be released in six months.

Hamdan - defending laws, like writing them, is like making sausage

First, the grueling nature preparing for what became arguably the most important constitutional law ruling by the Supreme Court in 30 years is incredible.

Take a constitutional law prof at Georgetown with a terminally ill father, a card-carrying-member of the ACLU Navy lawyer with ADD, and top legal eagles from white-shoe law firms pitching in pro bono work and getting frustrated at not being heard out enough in briefs, and you get some idea of the potential for conflict - potential that became actuality at times.

But yet, everybody held together, above all Prof. Neal Katyal and Lt. Com. Charles Swift.

However, the grind took its toll on Swift, with an eventual divorce and his Naval promotion path blocked.

And, continued confinement in Guantanamo continues to take its toll on Salim Hamdan.

In a brief wrap-up in that vein, Mahler talks about the post-Hamdan legal world, especicially the Military Commissions Act and the Boumediene case.

If you want a legal thriller that's real-life, not fiction, and about life and death constitutional issues, this is a must read.

Although offered as a novel, this randomly organized fictional biography of John Henry "Doc" Holliday more closely resembles the cacophonous result of a three-way collision among a thesaurus, a Bartlett's Familiar Quotations and a well-researched history of the American frontier. The story is derivative if not imitative of other postmodern fictional efforts in the same vein, most notably Joseph Heller's God Knows and James Carlos Blake's The Pistoleer. Literary pretensions pockmark the narrative like bullet holes in an old barn's side, and consistency, clarity and narrative flow are discarded in the name of self-conscious styling and authorial wordsmithing. Olds (Raising Holy Hell) traces the life of one of the West's most notorious characters gambler, gunman, consumptive companion to the notorious and noteworthy through a variety of literary devices including mock testimonials, newspaper reports, essayistic commentary, stultifying poetry and personal narrative spoken by Holliday himself. Bits of movie dialogue, song lyrics, references to television programs and other deliberate anachronisms litter the text and distract the reader almost as much as encyclopedic listings of everything from patent medicines to card games to euphemisms for prostitution. Unconventional grammar sometimes apparently deliberate, sometimes not also undermines Olds's attempt to provide an iconoclastic fictional account that will reveal his subject and at the same time move readers to a closer understanding of one of the West's most sensational figures: the results are more tedious than triumphant. The subject of scores of books and movies for his hand in the infamous gunfight at the OK Corral, Doc Hollidaythe consumptive dentist turned cardsharp and gunfightermay have at last found his poet in Bruce Olds, whose 336-page cubist novel circles and approaches Doc from every conceivable angle: from the inside, through his lover Kate's eyes or those of acquaintances like Billy the Kid; through poetry and resonant lists of Doc's slang, manners, symptoms, sexual habits, or belongings (from ivory-handled Colts to his edition of Poe). Like Olds's collage-style novel about the apocalyptic Abolitionist John Brown, Raising Holy Hell, his portrait of Holliday is a compelling literary jumble of earthy monolog and ethereal narrative, with stray bits of research left lying about for atmosphere. (It's a Western novel that quotes Beckett.) Olds's Doc is more convincing than the uncharismatic, phlegm-hacking character of Paul West's novel OK (LJ 4/15/00). Those waiting for the Earp-Holliday gun team to take the field will have to wait several hundred word-rich, experimental pages, however, since language is as much the star here as the deadly exchange in Tombstone. But the story does slowly tilt toward the OK showdown, The way every Odyssey drifts west/ inchmeal/ towards its Iliad. An ambitious and rewarding work for all fiction collections.

So many books and movies have featured Doc Holiday that there's little need for another unless the author takes a startlingly new approach. Olds attempts this with a shotgun assemblage of poems, quotations, fictional renderings, and "reportage." Kate Haroney, often depicted as shrewish and low, comes alive through Doc's eyes as a spirited frontierswoman whom he deeply loves. Doc himself is a southern gentleman, drawling and droll, a scholar. He is afflicted with consumption, the implications of which Olds discusses in detail. The diagnosis that he had six months to live--which Doc stretched to 15 years--defined him. Doc is gloomy, alcoholic, and violent. He is also brilliant as he contemplates what it means to be a walking dead man--to buck the tiger. Olds' technique is unsettling and results in a book hard to classify: a combined western, biography, and loose anthology of meditations on death. But as he did with John Brown in Raising Holy Hell (1995), Olds manages to pluck a real man out of the distortions of time and Hollywood myth. John Mort

Doc Holliday Shines Bright In The Shadow Of Death

In the popular imagination, John Henry Holliday is the fierce dark angel forever at Wyatt Earp's side. In "Bucking the Tiger", Bruce Olds tears away that public persona to reveal Holliday's ardent struggle to burn bright against the darkness. Doc Holliday's proclivities for dealing out death have been greatly exaggerated while his rage to live has gone mostly unnoticed. The reader follows Doc on his life's journey. We see John Henry's hurt and confused rage when, after his mother dies, his father remarries only a few months later. After he learns he is consumptive, we're with Doc as he goes West, takes up gambling and follows the professional circuit from Dallas to Deadwood, from Denver to Dodge City. We meet Wyatt Earp and travel to the dark and bloody town of Tombstone. We experience the gunfight at the O.K. Corral and its violent aftermath. Finally, we are there when Doc Holliday relinquishes his spirit with a quick drink and a wry joke. In covering Doc's story, Bruce Olds gives us more than just another historical novel. In this telling, Big Nose Kate Elder, Doc's inamorata, becomes a sustenance, an oasis of elan within Doc's ever diminishing life-world. When Holliday sojourned west, he didn't extend his life so much as prolong his death. "Bucking the Tiger" is thus a wide ranging reflection on mortality which refracts from Doc Holliday's life and legend back out again onto topics of universal concern. Near the end of the book, Doc writes that he "never intended for his life to resonate." But resonate it does, far beyond Doc Holliday's wildest imagination. Despite the dark subject matter, Olds provides remarkable outbursts of delightful humor. Old timer recollections of Doc are scattered throughout the book and many of these issue from characters in well known movies or TV shows. Steve McQueen's "Josh Randall" is identified as the author of "Fifty Years Spent Strapped to a Mare's-Leg". The "Mare's-Leg" being the odd sawed-off rifle McQueen lugged around on TV's "Wanted Dead or Alive". Few novels of any sort tackle profound questions with the adroitness of "Bucking the Tiger". Bruce Olds' way with the word is nothing short of miraculous. His command of history is nothing less than impressive. After this book, Doc Holliday will live on with the reader forever.

A bedazzling fever dream of a novel

Readers who demand a simple, chronologically linear narrative, please apply elsewhere. "Bucking the Tiger" is a fever dream of a novel, kaleidoscopic in its fragmented vision and very nearly hallucinatory in its voices. There is nothing straightforward about this book, an ambitious labyrinth largely made up of first person observations from Doc himself and Big Nose Kate and Wyatt Earp and Bat Masterson and Dodge City [women] and TV cowboy show heroes. Even Thomas Berger's Jack Crabb makes a walk-on appearance under another name. The Doc Holliday within its pages is something of a Gilgamesh in ancestry, one third man and two thirds cinematic image. In the Gunfight (almost) at the OK Corral segment - hands down, the best recreation of that event I have ever read - picture Val Kilmer in the starring role. And from that starting point, Olds delves deep into the mind of Holliday. When you pick up this book, prepare to be dazzled by pyrotechnics and perhaps occasionally daunted by its determinedly literary demeanor. Just don't expect Louis Lamour.

"Like a tiger whose leap has failed..."

Bruce Olds has talent coming out his pores, and we see it on glorious display here in his intense imagery, poetic prose, and earnest attempt to recreate the psychology of Doc Holliday, who knew for fifteen years that he would die of tuberculosis. Unfortunately, all this talent does not add up to a great novel, or even a good one. With a main character about whom little primary information is available, the author resorts to mountains of repetition of the small details that are known in order to flesh out a novel-length story.

Over fifty pages, for example, iterate and then reiterate, in only slightly different words, Holliday's realization that he will die from the tuberculosis which killed his mother, along with the symptoms of the disease, various names for it, and other famous people who died from it. None of these advance Holliday's biography, nor do similarly long sections which list, among other things, various names for whiskey, alternative words for prostitutes, types of gambling games, and ways to cheat. Newspaper excerpts describing Holliday, and quotations from people who knew Wyatt Earp, his friend, while interesting in an academic sense, are more like research than story, and they are merely presented, not integrated into a whole. A collection of poems in English by Joseph Brodsky, the supremely accomplished Russian poet who stood up to the repression of his native land and then constructed a whole new literary life and a huge reputation while in exile in the United States. Already established as a great Russian poet, Brodsky astonishingly achieved the equivalent in his adoptive language. Most of the poems in So Forth were written during the 10 years before his death, and while many exhibit his newly Americanized tongue, some revel in the mysterious accents that characterized his Russian works.

Nobel laureate Brodsky completed work on this sobering and brilliant collection just a week before his death this past January. Over a third of the poems collected here were written in English, Brodsky's adopted language, and the poet himself translated the rest from Russian, sometimes in collaboration. The tone of erudite melancholy which has always flavored Brodsky's verse is here so pervaded with thoughts of exile and mortality as to sometimes verge on outright despair. Among the collection's strongest works is "A Footnote to Weather Forecasts," in which "snowflakes float in the air like a good example/ of poise in a vacuum." In "New Life," Brodsky muses that "Ultimately, one's unbound/ curiosity about these empty zones,/ about these objectless vistas, is what art seems to be all about." Yet, many of these poems, especially those written in English, have a more colloquial, slang-infused rhyming style which owes a pronounced debt to Auden, as in "Song of Welcome": "Here's your food, here's your drink./ Also some thoughts, if you care to think." "Lullaby" shares its title with one of Auden's most famous verses: "Grow accustomed to the desert/ as to fate/ lest you find it omnipresent/ much too late." Brodsky doesn't always seem fully comfortable in this more casual mode; often his slang is clearly not that of a native speaker. But this is a small quibble in the face of an astonishing collection from a writer able to mix the cerebral and the sensual, the political and the intimate, the elegiac and the comic. In the book's final poem, "Taps," Brodsky, imagining his death, seems to offer a self-effacing wink, as if he were amused by the power he claims for poetry: "I'll twinkle among the wires, a sky's lieutenant,/ and hide in clouds when thunder roars,/ blind to the troops as they fold their pennant/ and run, pursued by the pen, in droves." Brodsky's death is a loss to literature; his final collection of poems is the best consolation we could ask for.

Translating the Clouds

A forced exile from Leningrad who went on to live in New York and New England, and teach at Mount Holyoke College, Joseph Brodsky is a serious poet--a brilliant self-translator of his own often brilliant poems--the National Poet Laureate under Clinton--and a man who advocated putting poetry books rather than Bibles in hotes drawers. Well I'm not sure one can find infinite solace or religious consolation proper in this work (which was, if not the last, then among the last of Brodsky's works--with many of the poems written in the mid-nineties shortly before his death in his fifties), one will find moral guidance at its non-preachy best. Like other poets, Brodsky writes of love and loss and the end of the century (one of the half-rhyming translated poems is entitled "fin de siecle"), but he does so with a certain nobility, a certain nongrandiose majesty that lifts him, without any display of effort on his part, to the ranks of the very finest poets ever. Unlike fellow exile Vladimir Nabokov, for example, who seems always to be arguing, thinking about arguing, or making a flourish of having no need to argue, for his posthumous recognition--and whose works, translated by his son, always seem a bit overwritten--Brodsky's poems read fresh and direct in his own translations. And yet, as with the greats of the Russian literary legacy (Chekov's characters are the subject of one poem), we are reminded in reading Brodsky that story-telling and poetry have reached peaks out of the purview of those who cannot appreciate say Pushkin in the original. Observation is a kind of translation, and there is the opposite problem, or rather tendency, of Brodsky's view of America (like Nabokov's) having something strangely quaint and distorted about it--as if strip malls could provide Americans with something more than the generic backdrop against which the exile spins his reveries and measures his memories. It is strange to see the archetypal nonexotic of America made strange through the exile's eyes. We must be grateful for Brodsky for taking the time to translate his own works. In this volume Brodsky laments the passing of time, the aging of lovers, the encroaching of death--he captures long-vanished armies in his poetic net, advises his daughter on where to look for him once he is gone. There is an uncompromising realism in him that is both frightening and refreshing. I thought "Clouds"--"lighter than the body/better than the soul"--one of the best poems ever written--or should I say translated.

Excellent

The poems here have a crispness, intensity and basic clarity sadly lacking in Eliiot, and it gives them a great range in bringing to life specific situations. In the format most of the poems are attached to a definite situation or story, making them more like very short fiction that happens to be beautifully and strangely expressed, rather than a whole reflection of literature on literature that I found ultimately alienating about the Wasteland.

And that's it. Not surprisingly I find it even more difficult to comment substantively about poetry that I like than to criticize it. I do think that Brodsky merits the Nobel Award he received,, and I could be interesting in seeing his other writing at some point. It also makes me interested in what other great literary poets are like, and the type of range that might be developed in mining this field more.

Stuart Dybek is the author of four other books of fiction, including Paper Lantern, published simultaneously with this volume, as well as two collections of poetry. I was totally captivated. Stuart Dybek has such a unique style, he can be crisp and clear or poetic and lyrical the next moment. Every story is unique but you begin to see the silky fibers of a web that brings them all together.

This collection of stories--short short and a few of normal length--demonstrates the wide range of Dybek's characters, interests, and settings. His dialogue is always sharp and accurate, his characters flawed yet sympathetic, his concerns the difficulties of real freedom for the average person, be it someone from the ghettos of Chicago or the Wall Street tycoon. A realist with a leaning toward the magical, his scenes are set in great, accurate detail, and the movement of his stories always points to some larger human problem: loneliness, meaning, the frustration of desire. This is a major book by an important American writer.

Just six poems make up the whole, each one a long composition in fluent blank verse: as before, Schnackenberg bestows her gifts of diction on scientific wonderments, on the horrors of history, and on the religious and philosophical texts of the past: a pencil contains œThe vein of graphite ore preoccupied/ In microcrystalline eternity,/ In graphite's interlinking lattices : on September 11, œthe heads of drums/ Exploded outward into gaping stars/ And bloodstained towers dematerialized. That vision and others throughout the book lean on excerpts from the Bhagavad-Gita and on the Chinese classic poem from which she takes her title, as the poet seeks (but does not find) a way to explain the evil and pain in this world. Schnackenberg's husband, the philosopher Robert Nozick, died in 2002. Most of the poems (however grand their speculation) also recall the terminal illness of an unnamed beloved: œHe tugged my face to his, as if he took/ His own life in his hands... and won't let go/ Unless you leave your fingerprints on me.

Gjertrud Schnackenberg was born in Tacoma, Washington, in 1953. The Throne of Labdacus (FSG, 2000) received the Los Angeles Times Book Prize in Poetry.

History, Love, & Death

If you're weary for a while of slams, bashes, -a-thons & the like, take up Schnackenberg's "Heavenly Questions". Best read at a single sitting, these few ample poems offer the whispered solace of incantation against loss, grief, rage, & the horrors of history ancient & current. Here again we are reminded of the lineage of poetry written in English, the frayed but inescapable fabric of the iambic line, the grace possible in long persistent effort. Here again is the "intelligence of love".

A Well Wrought Memorial

This poet was able to express how the death of her husband occurred and to do him justice as a beloved person. The setting is the hospital where he died after several operations. She describes the process of mental resistance, the recurring hope, the longing for a better outcome. It is a very spiritual account, but does not sugar coat the harshness of separation and how her mind kept bargaining. At the last she staggers from the hospital and sinks into a telephone booth. There she looks up her husband's name, still among the living. This is the best poetical account of the death of a loved one that I've ever read. She did not write it right away. There are several years between his death and this book.

who doesn't particularly like poetry. I don't know how she found it

I got this book as a gift from my sister, who doesn't particularly like poetry. I don't know how she found it, but I keep coming back to these haunting lines. I find some parallels with the work of Denise Levertov. These poems make me think of ocean waves, flooding in, pulling out. The sound of the water sizzling across sand and rocks. Some kind of life form in the water. Her tribute to her lost partner:

"I sit among the living, in a park...
I sit inside a coat he gave me once.
Systole and diastole. Not knowing when
I halted at this bench, not knowing when...
My heart-walls moving of their own accord..."

This makes me think of Denise Levertov's Childhood's End:

"The world alive with love, where leaves tremble,
systole and diastole marking miraculous hours,
is burning round the children where they lie
deep in caressing grasses all the day,
and feverish words of once upon a time
assail their hearts with languor and with swans..."
