Fascinating study, elegantly written

What an insightful, absorbing, and masterful study of an important and influential American poet. I knew very little about Williams's prose before, and I never fully appreciated how deeply his work and life were entwined. Leibowitz is the perfect guide and unraveler of yarns, who writes in a style that's blessedly readable, jargon-free, elegant and witty. What a welcome treat in such a scholarly work. I was especially moved by the beautiful last chapter of the book, about Williams's old age, when he suffered serial strokes and wrestled with aphasia. Many writers (Beckett, Rexroth, Meredith and West, to name but a few), have suffered a similar fate. Leibowitz brings to that chapter--as he does to the work as a whole--unusual clarity, empathy and sensitivity. I found the book altogether fascinating and profoundly moving, an essential passkey to understanding the heart of Williams' work.

Revealing Book

This book contains much revealing information I had not known about William Carlos Williams, the incredible American poet who was also a New Jersey physician. For anyone interested in poets or in Williams in particular, it is a treasure.

Not This One

Leibowitz' book is an oddly constricted view of an expansive poet. If you're going to read only one literary biography of William Carlos Williams, make it Paul Mariani's 1981 WILLIAM CARLOS WILLIAMS: A NEW WORLD NAKED.
