All the Odes: A Bilingual Edition (Spanish Edition), by Pablo Neruda

A career-spanning volume, charting the Nobel laureate's work in the ode form

Pablo Neruda was a master of the ode, which he conceived as an homage to just about everything that surrounded him―from an artichoke to the clouds in the sky, from the moon to his own friendship with Federico García Lorca, from the seasons to his favorite places in Chile. He was in his late forties when he committed himself to writing an ode a week and in the end produced a total of 225, which are dispersed throughout his varied oeuvre. This bilingual volume, edited by Ilan Stavans, the distinguished translator and scholar of Latin American literature, gathers all the odes together for the first time in any language. Rendered into English by an assortment of accomplished translators that includes Philip Levine, Paul Muldoon, Mark Strand, and Margaret Sayers Peden, collectively they read like the personal diary of a man in search of meaning who sings to life itself, to our connections with one another, and to the place we have in nature and the cosmos. All the Odes is a lasting statement on the role of poetry as a lightning rod during tumultuous times.

From Publishers Weekly
The Chilean Nobel laureate, who died in 1973, combined stratospheric powers of invention with a fecundity that bordered on the prolix; among his many creations were 225 odes, almost all in very short lines, connecting accessible, democratic vocabulary to exalted emotion. Most of the odes date from the 1950s; some odes on household objects (to a lemon, to a potato) remain much imitated in English. Stavans says he is the first to gather all the odes, including very late, very early, and more formal outliers. Stavans and a few lesser-known translators account for a large majority of translations here, though W. S. Merwin and Stephen Mitchell also appear. Along with a fishing boat, an elephant, vegetables, French fries, New Year's Day, and other this-worldly phenomena, Neruda's odes show both his communist and romantic sides, praising love itself, clarity, broken things, and V. I. Lenin. This enormous book provides an education of sorts into Neruda's contexts as well as his effusive mind. Daunting to read straight through, sometimes banal, the volume nonetheless has profuse delights: Neruda lauds seagulls as you are:/ your insatiable voraciousness,/ your screech in the rain, while Ode to Laziness begins Yesterday I felt this ode/ would not get off the floor. (Oct.)

From Booklist
The ode, a form with origins in Greek choral poetry, was revived in Elizabethan lyric poetry. Since then, its emphasis has been shifted to rhetorical apostrophization expounding on the nature of things and ideas. Perhaps no modern poet is so practiced a composer of odes as Neruda, who vowed to pen one a week. This enormous collection features a wide range of his best imagery (the verdant texture of corn’s green hair, green needles of rain), odes that express his discomfiting sympathy for Stalinist politics, and many that are focused on men and insemination and that turn attention back to the poet with a wink. The greatest draw of this bilingual edition is editor Stavans’ decision to present the whole Chilean enchilada, as it were, from the enchantingly narrative (“Ode to the Eye”) to the less excellent and problematically obscure (“Ode to Clarity”). The able translators, including poets Jane Hirshfield, Paul Muldoon, and W. S. Merwin, illuminate the original Spanish, and 70 poems have been translated for the first time into English. A substantial gathering of universally influential work. --Diego Báez

Review

“How could you not love this book? Put it by the bedside. Or by the porcelain convenience. Anywhere you find yourself alone with a minute. Flip pages to a random ode, and have a ball . . . These are direct, open, rapid, often joyful poems addressed to things of this world--onion, building, butterfly, eye, horse, washerwoman, envy, old poet, typography (yes!), Paul Robeson . . . . It's a grateful, grief-stricken, revolving-in-wonder song of life on Earth, a reminder, in short, skinny bursts, of the thrill of what's in front of us . . . By far most of the odes strike me as still vigorous. And Stavans' notes explain much that has gone forgotten . . . If you read All the Odes, you will live more alive to the living world.” ―John Timpane, Philly.com with praise for Pablo Neruda

“There is no poetic work in the Spanish language as exuberant and multifarious as that of Neruda, a poetry that has touched so many different worlds and irrigated such diverse vocations and talents. The only comparable case I know in other languages is that of Victor Hugo . . . Undoubtedly, Neruda's work will endure and continue to bewitch future generations of readers the way it has bewitched ours.” ―Mario Vargas Llosa with praise for Pablo Neruda

Everything But the Odes
By Publicagent
Pablo Neruda is probably my favorite poet of all-time. I have read the majority of his works in English, so I got this text primarily for the reputed 70 odes that have yet to appear in English. The 70 odes are nearly 1/3 of the text, so that is quite substantial. The other 2/3 I am happy to read again. Many of Neruda's odes are scintillating, some are fun, and others leave something to be desired.

Instead of commenting on the odes, which is the work of Neruda, and always worth 5 stars, I want to comment on the other parts of the text, namely the work of the translators/ publishing house.

1) Formatting.
I like it and I don't. Instead of English and Spanish on opposite pages, which would have made the text an absurd 1600 pages, they placed the English and Spanish on the same page. On one hand this is nice because we have a bilingual version of all the odes in about 800 pages. It's also nice to look across from the English and see the Spanish words near the eye. But this is precisely why it's distracting. I applaud the choice of putting the Spanish in a lighter grey text, but it is still a little distracting. When I read the odes, which have very few words per line, I can see the grey text in the corner of my eye, and since it's on the same page, my eye naturally wants to go there even though I do not read Spanish. I have gotten a bit used to this after reading 100 plus pages.

2) Introduction.
I honestly wanted more regarding the publication of the odes. There is mention of what Neruda published in Spanish book-wise, and references to some of the English translations, in addition to some biographical notes, and commentary on the simple style of the odes. So what is missing? I wanted to know why some odes were previously translated into English and some weren't. It can be quite frustrating to try and match the numerous English translations with the Spanish editions. I have what was the most substantial collection of odes prior to this one, Selected Odes of Pablo Neruda, and it was never mentioned in the introduction. There is also no discussion on how the 18 translators were chosen. (Stavans often translates himself.) There is a nice bibliography in the "Notes" in the back, but more transparency in the overall process would have been nice.

3) Organization of Odes
Alphabetical? There is mention in the introduction that this what Neruda wanted for his first collection of odes, and the manner in which he published four of the volumes so it make sense in that respect. But it also seems a little arbitrary. Since it is all of the odes that he ever wrote, the order in which he wrote them, or in the texts that they were originally published would have been nice. Still, alphabetical makes it easy to find particular odes that people like, such as Ode to the Artichoke. I can't even find the 70 odes that were never printed in English before which is where I would have liked to start.

Overall, I have to give credit where credit is due. Bringing about the complete odes in a bilingual text is ultimately impressive. It is very welcome to the Neruda/English canon and my life is certainly better with it. I give the collection 4.5 stars overall.

Celebrate the insignificant
By A Reader
Lovely way to realize and celebrate life in all its glorious simplicity. Pablo Neruda's odes are observations of love for objects surrounding us everyday. He was truly one who appreciated being alive. This is a wonderful book to go to when you are feeling depressed. It makes you realize what a gift it is to be alive on this earth of ours.

BATHING IN POETRY
By Hansen Alexander
Don't tell me that you were doing something else last week besides reading this wonderful collection of the odes of Pablo Neruda.

Reading this collection is more like bathing in poetry. All your senses are alive to these wonderful words. They just flow over you, relax you, instruct you, inspire you, make you feel great to be alive.

Neruda takes subject matter as obtuse as your feelings and as concrete as the water, the air, the land, and earth, and the magical mystery of men and women, and love.

His appropriate tribute in his ode to Walt Whitman near the end of the book is a fitting conclusion to the sharing of universal passions over time, and the reminder that poetry, unlike the latest novels, is timeless.
