Superstardom, admits Davis, has always been his be-all and end-all, and the almost obligatory downside--failed marriages, sickness, age, his own personal IRS auditor--are featured heavily here, along with insider show-biz gossip. More up-tone tales involve life-long buddy and supporter Frank Sinatra, the Rat Pack, the Kennedys, Richard Nixon. At the core of the book is the extraordinary black experience of the last 50 years. Davis became a star in the '40s at a Vegas hotel where he could headline but not sleep. In the '70s, he slept in Lincoln's bed in the White House, guest of the president. A FASCINATING LOOK AT BEHIND THE SCENES OF STARDOM

I really enjoyed this book, I had no idea what the blacks in the US had to go through, having grown up in Australia. Sammy had a big chip on his shoulder which he carried throughout his life but it is understandable when you read what he went through. This isn't just a boring story of a star's life, it is a fascinating look at racism, politics, being rich beyond your dreams and in debt for millions - a great read.

Behind the glitz view of SuperStar life

Sometimes this book is a little hard to follow. The writers jump into topics suddenly. If you don't know a whole lot about Sammy Davis Jr. you can get mixed up. It is worth reading though. Davis had a hard life and worked very hard at being a star. He had flaws and he admits them. I wish he could have balanced his family and public life better. He thought he had to be spending $$$. drinking, drugging and fooling around with women to keep his image going and it hurt his family. He was very talented a superstar, that is what he should have focused on. Anyone wanting a show business career should take lessons from this book.
Davis did a great deal to help black people and often they misunderstood him and didn't appreciate him. The most shocking thing for me was how after he worked so hard to get JFK elected president JFK just dumped Davis -- uninviting him to the inauguration. I'd never have had anything to do with the Kennedy's after that. Davis was so polite and caring and he really suffered too. Richard Nixon respected Davis and invited him to Washington several times. Who would have thought that?
