About the Author
Ian S. MacNiven's authorized biography of Lawrence Durrell was a New York Times Notable Book for 1998. He has edited two collections of Durrell's correspondence (with Richard Aldington and Henry Miller), is the author of numerous articles on literary modernism, and has directed and spoken at conferences on three continents. He is also a past president of the D. H. Lawrence Society of North America and of the International Lawrence Durrell Society. MacNiven resides on the west bank of the Hudson, outside the town of Athens, New York.

A revelation, immensely readable and impeccably documented ....

For both those who knew its subject personally, and those who only knew something of him through his own books and those he published, Ian MacNiven's biography of James Laughlin, "Literchoor Is My Beat...," is a revelation, a frank and compassionate account of a complex man who, in spite of frequently difficult personal and family issues, lived a life dedicated to the furtherance and preservation of much of what makes up the modern literary canon. Drawing on the immense archive of Laughlin's personal and professional papers preserved for posterity at Harvard, MacNiven's impeccably documented and eminently readable biography as well charts the history of New Directions, the publishing firm Laughlin founded and nurtured, and is rich with insight into Laughlin's personal and business relationships with his occasionally restless and always demanding stable of writers, with the ND staff members who supported and managed Laughlin's endeavors, and with his colleagues in the publishing world. It serves as an invaluable and illuminating companion to the recently published edition of Laughlin's Complete Poems. This reader is compelled to observe, however, that wholly apart from considerations of the high quality of MacNiven's work, its publisher, Farrar, Straus & Giroux, should be called out on an important point: this biography of a man who was for decades intensely attuned to the physical production quality of the books he published, who knew well and appreciated the significance of fine typography, distinctive design and fine binding, is bound in the cheapest, ugliest and least substantial paper board binding from a major publisher this reader - who has been involved professionally in the book business for four decades - has seen in many, many years.

A great must read book

I have NEVER read a finer, more insightful, more beautifully written biography than this. First of all, the man himself. Laughlin was born with many advantages, and he wasted none of them, using them as a springboard to prodigious achievement, suffused with an infectious joie de vivre and a never satisfied yearning for exceptional women. Then there was his early - as a college freshman - realization of the greatness of modernism in literature. Compare him to Peggy Guggenheim's similar genius as an art collector. Almost any year in Laughlin's life will give the average reader a lifetime program of self education. And he was a pioneer of American skiing, creating the Alta ski resort and lodge. Perhaps his greatest achievement was the editing of Thomas Merton's Asian Diaries, one of the great works of spiritual experience. MacNiven has to be proud of this great achievement.

Fascinating Lore

You can quarrel about James Laughlin's character, but the fact remains that if you remove him from the 20th century's literary scene, you do it considerable damage. He was the publisher of so many indispensable writers, and this biography's lore about Laughlin, his writers and other characters involved makes for a fascinating and frequently hilarious read.
When Tennessee Williams saw the jacket on the first edition of A STREETCAR NAMED DESIRE, he wrote Laughlin that the design was "original and striking" but that he objected to the "sort of shocking pink which reminds me of a violet scented lozenge."
At first mention in the book, Anais Nin is simply identified as "compulsive diarist." That would have frosted her. (Nin considered New Directions her ideal publisher, but Laughlin wasn't interested.)
Maria Britneva, a Russian-English ballerina turned actress, tried to lure Tennessee Williams away from homosexuality, while simultaneously pursuing Laughlin, Marlon Brando and George Plimpton. At one point, it appeared that Britneva would become Laughlin's second wife. She referred to Truman Capote as having "a voice so high that only a dog can hear it."
When Laughlin headed up PERSPECTIVES USA, an international journal funded by the Ford Foundation in the early years of the Cold War, he talked about "breaking down the barriers between the academic world and the real world," going on to say, "We are not at all interested in one more dead learned quarterly where myopic dons can butter or peck at each other."
But Laughlin never had the slightest interest in publishing books for the masses. His interest, as he put it himself, was in "publishing books that will be around after Robert Ludlum and Judie Krantz are forgotten."
Henry Miller constantly complained that New Directions was cheating him on royalties When Miller died and Laughlin received a statement of his finances, Laughlin rhymed, "Glad to know that dear old Hennery did not die in penury."
It's interesting to learn that Laughlin lived forever in fear of what his mother and his aunt would think of the books he published. He could have published LOLITA but turned it down and told Nabokov to take it to Barney Rosset at Grove Press.
